Michel Colombier (R.I.P.) - His Music with Jaco, Prince, EWF and others Y'all ever checked out Michel Colombier(R.I.P. )'s albums , "Old Fool Back On Earth", "Michel Colombier", or "Wings", or any of his soundtrack scores?
I was lamenting his recent death ( nov. 14, after a bout with cancer)-- My first introduction to him was coming across the album "Old Fool Back On Earth", back in '84, and being knocked out by it---- like most of the music he made in his career, the album spans Classical, Pop, Jazz, Soul, Rock and Avant- Garde, and it blew me away... coincidentally, around the same time, "Purple Rain" was released, which featured his score...also, one of the pieces from his album, "El Solitario", was featured on the "Against All Odds" soundtrack, and Earth Wind and Fire added lyrics to it ,releasing it as "We're Living In Our Own Time", on their "Electric Universe"album...a year later, I found his 1979 album "Michel Colombier", which featured Jaco Pastorius and Larry Carlton as soloists (incidentally, a composition from this album, "Spring", is featured in a slightly altered form in the "Purple Rain" scene where Apollonia gives Prince the Cloud guitar...also, all you Jaco enthusiasts, you got to hear his fretless bass playing on the composition, "Dreamland" ----Beautiful!), and his 1970 album, "Wings" features Paul Williams and Lani Hall. I also love the classical album he orchestrated for Branford Marsalis, "Romances for Saxophone" on Sony Columbia Masterwoks, as well as his work with Jean Luc Ponty, Pierre Henry, Maurice White, Airto and Flora Purim,, Rodney Franklin, Johnny Mathis, etc, as well as his countless soundtracks...he will be greatly missed... ... A great soundscaper.
Old Fool Back On Earth is a real sleeper. Figures that you'd be hip to it. A friend who is into film scoring turned me on to it. Another artist whose works I need to research more. This is the Claude Debussy quote Michel's father placed on his wall. "An artist is at the service of art, not the other way around." Man it's great to have your quality posts here again. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn.
