Madonna, Michael Jackson, David Bowie, & Eminem

Pop Stars: Madonna, Michael Jackson, David Bowie, And Eminem

By Robert Paul Reyes
Dec. 5, 2004

The seminal pop stars of the last generation were chameleons, individuals who attempted to have no real self outside of a series of video images. They were Andy Warhol clones manufacturing music with a beat you could dance to.

Madonna was/is a Geisha girl, a virgin, an erotic temptress, a material girl and a bad actress. It would be easier to find bin Laden than to find the genuine Madonna. In fact, the real Madonna may not exist in the real world. She comes to a semblance of life only in the glare of the camera.

Michael Jackson is black. He's white. He has ambiguous sexuality and indeterminate gender. The King of Artifice, in his effort to be reduced literally to an image, has become a freakish mannequin.

Michael Jackson's first album, Off The Wall, was an R & B masterpiece, his subsequent releases were rock/pop/soul hybrids. His music evolved from a black genre to a white genre -- because that is where the money is. The King of Pop evolved commercially -- not creatively.

David Bowie has gone through many chaaanges. It is telling that fans don't ask, "Do you prefer Bowie's heavy metal records or his disco records?" It is more common for his followers to inquire, who is your favorite Bowie? The Thin White Duke? Ziggy Stardust? There is not one David Bowie. There are many incarnations.

These postmodern pop stars exist in their own world. Publicity is sustenance. The media the only institution worthy of acknowledgment. Flesh is not real. Sprit is not real. Only celluloid is real. Only cash is real.

But Madonna is now old and wrinkled, David Bowie's next change may involve changing his Depends and Michael Jackson is figuratively and literally falling apart as illustrated by his disintegrating silicon nose.

The pop icons of this generation are more authentic, more earthy than their immediate predecessors. Eminem is a total jerk, but he makes no effort to smooth his rough edges. He markets himself as a thug. He raps about killing his wife and mother and he is making a killing at the record stores and movie theaters.

The mantra of today's rap stars is, "Keeping it real," a striking contrast to pop stars like Jackson and Prince who were concerned almost exclusively with image. The icons of the 80's lived in a Hollywood realm that had evolved past quaint notions like authenticity or belief.

I don't like poseurs like Bowie and Madonna and I don't like exhibitionists like Eminem. Too much artifice and too much reality can both make you throw up. I guess that's why I don't keep up with the latest fads in pop music.

I find refuge in my Oldies station. "What the world needs now is love, sweet love." Ah, real music.

Not to mention boring as hell. He must love reading his own thoughts cause most people could probably give a crap less. He's just trying to be shocking in order to get people's attention. Unfornately, he got it.

That's how most editorial pieces are! At least the good ones have a point, unlike this guy's.

That's another problem with today's artists, they "keep it real". Everyone looks alike and blends into a crowd of everyday people. A star is supposed to look like a star....over-the-top custom made outfits and wild hair. Stars from the 1970s and 1980s would never blend in with a crowd, they would stand out and I love it!

Love Janet... but I don't think she approaches Icon status... she's like Mariah and Whitney... great at what they do... but not really Icons

Arguing with a Madonna fan about this is like trying to have sex with air --
you get nothing.

Honey I love both of them...
I've seen Janet live 4 times... have every album... and own 4 bootlegged concerts... know most of her life story ... but I don't think she is legendary beyond her fan base. Her breakthough album was mostly a project spear headed by Jam and Lewis and carries the MPLS sound. Rhythm Nation and it's tour are very good and probably the closest she came to greatness. janet. was a great turn from RN1814 and I throughly love the janet. tour... Velvet Rope is the album that helped me get throgh coming out... but i don't think she is a legend or an icon... sorry... she had the potential but got scared and ran back to safety.

lol my spelling sucks lately what's up with that lol

Scat play and rimming are different... I know... I am a Leather boy and that my dear is rimming... i do it... most every gay man does it... and most everyone gay or staright who has had it done enjoys it... scat is something that is done rarely and most people look down on it... but those that do it are very proud of it and very vocal about... trust me I have seen scat play and that isn't it.

don't talk shit about things you don't know or don't understand. those who have come before me have fought LONG AND HARD with the police and society to get those outside of Leather to understand us...

comments and action like yours promote hate and bigorty and get people NO WHERE.

I find this to be a really odd column. At first glance, it would seem like this person could be a teenager or something. But I did a little poking around...this guy is a columnist from central Virgina near Lynchburg...so there you go. He looks to be in his 40's or maybe 50. I am willing to bet he did not understand nor like the 80's...nor is he really in tune with where these people he doesn't like are today.

What get's me is that he's usually a political writer. Maybe he should stick to writing what he knows about.nod

Sorry to get off topic of...erm where where we...oh yeah...poop play (WHERES DOOK?), but I thought I'd interject where that article came from.

it's worse than that, actually. he doesn't like artists who change up their style and image a lot, because there's no "self" to them rolleyes

yet he doesn't like artists who are only always themselves.

wtf does he want?
