1) Tonex - Out of the Box -- his live, double CD. A cool place to start, as it covers a lot of different gospel styles and T has one of the best voices in music. Period.
2) Fred Hammond & RFC - Pages of Life I & II -- another double CD effort that mixes live and studio deals. Fred used to lead the gospel mega-group Commissioned and has been likened to King David for his modern-day psalms. All of Fred's stuff is good (I like this one for the depth of his material). 3) Commissioned - Matters of the Heart. The sounds are from the mid-'90s, so it might sound a bit dated (Chuckii Booker does some really nice production on here, though), but the songs are very uplifting (as with all of the Commissioned albums). Also worth picking up, their State of Mind disc. 4) Kim Burrell - Everlasting Life. Kim has gospel chops for days that are extremely jazz-influenced. Anointed singing that speaks to everyday issues. Kim's the bomb. Even Prince gave her a shout-out from his web site, a few years ago. This was the album he was hypin'. 5) Karen Clarke-Sheard - The Heavens are Telling. I'm not a big Clarke sisters fan, but I have to say Karen's album is the bomb. Very uplifting, very contemporary and a treat to listen to. 6) Yolanda Adams - Mountain High, Valley Low -- All of Yolanda's albums (well, most -- I don't have all of them) are wonderful mixes of great singing and good material. This one seems to be my favorite of hers. Some great songs. 7) Richard Smallwood - Live in Atlanta -- Rich is one of the best examples of classically trained gospel songwriters on the scene today. His stirring pieces often mix Negro spirituals with classical and contemporary grooves ... topped with phenomenal singing. "Atlanta" is a good place to start with him. He's written some great songs over the years. 8) Rich Mullins - Songs Vols. 1 & 2 -- You're asking for gospel, and Rich Mullins was known for contemporary Christian. But, his greatest hit, "Awesome God," has had a few gospel covers. He was a tremendous songwriter. If you find you like his stuff, be sure to check out A Liturgy, A Legacy & A Ragamuffin Band, his masterpiece. 9) Nichole Nordeman - This Mystery -- Another CCM artist, but her songs are so tight, my best music buddies and I rave about her work. All her stuff slams; I also highly recommend her Woven & Spun CD. 10) Crystal Lewis - More Greatest Hits -- Known as that SANGIN' woman who transformed Kirk Franklin's "I Am Here," the ensemble hit that also featured Bono, R. Kelly and Mary J. Blige, Crystal's voice makes people being introduced to her talent do a double take. "Blue-eyed soul" doesn't begin to convey the gift this woman has. Her voice is the bomb. 11) CeCe Winans - Alabaster Box -- I'd be remiss, if I didn't mention at least one of the Winans, that super-talented gospel dynasty. They all sing well. They all minister -- particularly after the miraculous life-from-death healing of singer Ron Winans. But CeCe's CD is all about worship, even when it grooves. Also worth picking up was this disc's predecessor, Everlasting Love. I hope these help. I have a bunch more, but these are great starting points. God bless.

Some of the greatest "live" musicians can be found on CDs like:
Hillsong: Blessed Clint Brown: Live from Orlando Lakewood Live: We Speak To Nations Isreal And The New Breed: Live From Another Level I highly recommend giving these a listen... not just to someone interested in Godly music, but all music. But if the music brings you closer to God, then... cool! 1 John 4: 1–6 http://www.biblegateway.c...ersion1=31

Try some old school Shirley Caesar.
It's not that I'm dissing her newer material, it's just that I haven't listened to it. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

BeBe and CeCe Winans "different lifestyles".....very pop gospel, but this is as far as I go.....apparantly the hardcore gospelists did not approve of this or the Winans other efforts as they r not "real" enough.....

Love Alive 1 and 2 by Walter, Edwin, and Tremaine Hawkins. Classic songs that were recorded in the late 70's, but still sounds uplifting and great today. "Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!

[Edited 11/28/04 19:01pm] HeyBaby, I am a Christian and I listen to a LOT of Gospel...of course... just like we go crazy over Prince and other musicians...there are a LOT of talented musicians in Gospel....you mentioned the Clark Sisters and the leader of the group is named "Twinkie Clark." Twinkie is a songwriter, musician, arranger and an extrememly talented singer. She was the one that wrote, produced and arranged ALL of their music(about 13 albums of material) and in addition, Twinkie Clark is known in secular and Gospel circles as one of the most talented singers, pianists and organists ever. Coko from SWV and Yolanda Adams has credited Twinkie as a vocal influence. These are some of the Gospel albums you should check out: "Home Once Again..Live In Detroit"/ TWINKIE CLARK(2004): This is a nice Gospel album featuring Twinkie's booming voice and nice songs...it also features an organ solo by her that is OUT OF THIS WORLD "The Best Is Yet To Come"/MARTHA MUNIZZI(2003): She reminds me of a Gospel version of Teena Marie..a white soulful vocalists..she is AWESOME! "Live From Another Level"/ISRAEL & NEW BREED(2004): The leader of this group, Israel Haughton, plays live acoustic guitar on most of the tracks.....the songs have an AWESOME sound! "Dorinda"/DORINDA CLARK COLE(2002): Sister of Twinkie Clark...DORINDA has a traditional(shouting) feel to her and her vocal delivery is full of anointing..she has a rich alto voice that I love!

I don't have a lot of Gospel music either, but I do enjoy some every now and then beside classic Mahalia I also dig The Winans, Tramaine Hawkins, Sounds of Blackness, (early) Take 6, Mavis Staples, Clarke Sisters, Kirk Franklin ... Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!
