bowie

Bowie is the man!!I just got his recent dvd and it is excellent!! The sound is great and the performnaces are great. I love his choice of songs. Of course, there are more I'd like to hear, but 30 damn songs is pretty damned good!!And the venue is really nice, too.

I had never heard the albums "low" or "lodger",but I picked up "low" recently. I am really pleased. Bowie is just one helluva quality artist.I even like some of his really strange paintings. I wonder if Prince has any paintings.

I picked up the DVD this weekend as well, and it's really an excellent production for the most part. Great sound and very well shot. I could have done without the effects and occasionally jumpy editing, but this is hardly the worst offender as far as concert DVDs are concerned.

My biggest complaint with the DVD is the same one I had when I saw the Reality concert earlier this year - far too much new material, and terrible pacing on the first encore. I have nothing against Bowie's recent material - I'd say he's experienced a creative renaissance on his last two records - but it seemed to me he was really hitting the audience over the head with it. And, with all the material he had to choose from, why did he open his first encore with two very lengthy and (I thought) very bland ballads, again from his recent albums. That completely anaesthetized the audience at the show I attended.

you know, i felt the same way about the new material (except for the heathen stuff, which i'm really nuts about), but the odd thing is, watching the dvd a few times has really warmed me to the reality album. i was bound to resign myself to not liking that album very much, but i guess it was recorded to be done justice in a live setting, and for me, anyway, i'd have to say it's doing the trick. that section in the middle of the concert dvd, though - with hallo spaceboy and fantastic voyage and sister midnight...ahhh...pure bliss. love

Oh, I agree - seeing the new material live and on the DVD has warmed me up to it - I just wish there hadn't been quite so much.

I know that Bowie would certainly rather retire than just tour as a nostalgia act trading in on past glories, so I'm happy to take whatever bones he throws my way, and we got a few great bones at the show I saw. I was not expecting to get All the Young Dudes or Panic in Detroit, and Under Pressure was practically heart-stopping. I hope I don't sound like I'm slamming the show or dvd - just a few minor beefs...

They'll be released Feb 2005. Still some time to go unfortunately!

BTW, Slip Away and Bring Me the Disco King are absolutely fantastic performances on the DVD! I'm really glad these were included.

I don't mind when an artist performs a lot of the newer material. It means they're passionate about the show they're putting on. If someone who's been around as long as Bowie goes on the road and does nothing but non-stop hits, what's the point really? To make money and satisfy all the semi-fans. I think part of what's made him interesting and relevant for so long is that he's forced his audience to grow with him. And for the most part, they have. That's no small feat. Now if only Prince could find a way to combine his One Nite Alone and Musicology tours, he'd be in the same ballpark.

Funny, when I saw him this past May, he did only a few songs off each of the last 2 CD's (and they were great) - I was actually surprised he didn't do more from "Reality". And as far as I remember, the encore was 3 songs from "Ziggy".

Can you give me the playlist for this DVD? Also, is it one concert or a compilation? Thanks.

i'm so happy "stage" is being re-issued again...finally! i know i'm in the minority with this one, but it's my favorite live bowie album ever...though i gotta say, i love 'em all (even if he sounds like he's got one foot in the grave on "david live").

Stage is awesome. David Live may be more interesting because of the new territory he was mining, but his voice was shit on that. Stage sounds much more assured. I love, love, love the version of "Soul Love" on there. Finally turned into a funky little soul song. biggrin

believe it or not, i think the live bonus disc that came with the "bowie at the beeb" box set is my second favorite bowie live album. the selection of songs he did was just phenomenal.

That's not so hard to believe. That was a great show. I only wish I had seen the video of it when it was still airing.

I love the Ziggy Motion Picture now that it's been remastered. "My Death" is my shit!

I actually watched my crappy old VHS of it the other night with my family. None of them had ever seen it. And I've never been able to find the DVD in stores. As bad as the sound and picture are, it kicked everybody's ass. Technology will only get you so far. That was one killer performance!

i was actually lucky enough to see this on the big screen once in NYC...it was absolutely phenomenal, a religious experience. i went with my best friend, who always rolled her eyes at my bowie obsession, but afterwards, she was all, "so...you've got a copy on CD that you can burn me, right?" lol

Cool! I love accidentally converting people.

I was supposed to go to the screening of this too a few years back at the Detroit Institute of Art. But I had this weird medical thing related to migraine headaches where my vision would get all prism-y and eventually go white. It didn't happen very often, but it just had to happen right as I was supposed to go to that show. Fucky. If I would've made the drive without killing myself, it probably would've been a pretty enhanced way to experience it. lol
