Do u still own any of these albums? If so which ones and which ones have I missed out?

I have missed loads out but damn was r'n'b pop better back in late 80's-early 90's? U agree.....u must love some of those albums right? Compare that list to one of rnb music over the last 5 years and this list in alot longer! Yet critics love to play how crap all this music is now.....Newjack and it's related dance pop artists was a breed of music that was fresh, innovative yet mixed rnb, soul, hip hop and pop! It had rap breakdowns and beats with smooth harmonies and pop hooks and melodies.....the innocense was lost during gangster rap and grunge and Newjack was officially dead! Dance pop came back in the form of Britney Spear's crew yet the sound was more clean cut and it had lost its funk in my eyes.....

Newjack deserves respect and yet still np dj's play Newjack at clubs.....I hope, like disco has, Newjack gets it's props in the near future.....

I am not African. Africa is in me, but I cannot return.
I am not taína. Taíno is in me, but there is no way back.
I am not european. Europe lives in me, but I have no home there.
I am new. History made me. My first language was spanglish.

The late 1980s was the beginning of the end. There was still some good stuff out but nothing like the 1970s and early 1980s. In the late 1980s, ballads started taking over, funk groups started dying out, and it's like everyone started losing their rhythm. Very few put out hardcore jams because everyone was so busy watering their music down for crossover appeal. The best thing to come out of the late 1980s was house music but once it made a short-lived splash in the early 1990s, it all started to sound alike.

As for the 1990s, that was absolutely the worst decade in music history. I wish I could totally erase that decade. Nothing remained but ballads and midtempo hip hop. Every decade sees a change in styles but when the year 2000 came, nothing changed. We are approaching our fifth year in a new decade and no change is in sight. It's not about music any more, it's about money...and with a new generation that only knows music by MUCH lowered standards and major corporations like Clear Channel controlling what's being played, a change will never come. Music these days is totally depressing.

Chuckii Booker had another album on Atlantic called Niice and Wiild that a cool single called Games was released from.

"Why you wanna, play your games on me."

He was also involved with a group on Epic called Tease that had a grind-ballad called Firestarter.

I have both his solo's.....I like the title track "niice and wild" "with all my heart" "games" "I giit around" "deep c diver".....good album!

But "turned away" is one of the most beutiful, yet funky songs i have ever heard.....video was alright too biggrin

Mind u "turned away" does sound pretty much the same as "spread my wings" by troop, which Chukki also wrote/produced a couple of tracks for.....I way prefer "turned away" though

I got his "draped" album! I heard he was shot dead soon after the album released! He had a good voice that was more then capable for being a session backing singer if his solo career went no where! I like "thats not the way" best.....even sadder considering he is now dead!

the pic of him inside the booklet makes me a little sad too.....good looking man.....

Yeah, he was shot before he even could make a video. Sadly, he left a daughter behind. I think he was shot while sitting in a car. They used to play that one song that went "...one girl fulfills my physical needs...the other girl provides for me mentally" sorry I don't know the title for that one, but they played it alot here in Cleveland in 91' they also used to play "Kiss amd make up" and some song about rain.

thnax 4 the info.....I had no idea he did not even have time to make a video? Sure glad the album got released though! So sad about his daughter too, I hope she knows that still a few of us in the world like his music!

"... one girl fulfills my physical needs....." song is "who will i choose", and infact, that is one of my fav songs off the album!

Ballad about rain is called "pouring like rain" and again it is a good song! good slowjam.....

"kiss and make up" is the correct title too! biggrin

I do not like the 70's stuff much but I have respect 4 it though! I hope u respect Newjackswing and it's subgenres as it was a new, fresh sound and infact, rnb in early 80's was played out pieces of shit like Lional ritchie and Luther Vandross.....it became too adult contemporary and Newjack was for the young and hip.....Newjack gave rnb a kick up the arse! Newjack was rnb on steroids!!!

Excuse me, but did this guy with Hammer on as his avatar (with no scarcism in sight) just call Luther Vandross a piece of shit? New Jack was a good shot in the arm since R&B was becoming so very AC but Luther wasn't as smaltzy as Atlantic Starr or as gimicky as Lionel Richie (I like a lot of his stuff but "Dancing On The Ceiling"?). Credit where credit is due, Luther could sing, write and produce some great slow and even upbeat records.

nod Vinny, I agreed with alot of your points especially the ones about Lionel, Lurther, Atlantic Star and New Jack. People can dog New Jack if they want to but it that form of music did try to establish a bridge between the odd and the new.

New Jack is not exactly one of my favorite forms of music but I do like a little of it. At least it was given the chance to get airplay, become a trend, and either die or go underground just like every other form of music such as disco, house, go-go, etc. R&B radio nowadays is controlling what stays in style and they are only going to play two types of music...midtempo hip hop and ballads.

As for Luther Vandross, his late 1980s to present music bores me to death, but I do have major respect for his earlier work with the groups Change and The BB&Q Band. Luther did have more in him than just ballads and there is some funk even on his earlier albums such as the track "Super Lady" from the "Never Too Much" album. I feel the same way about Lionel Richie also that came from The Commodores. Now someone like Whitney Houston, I have absolutely no respect for because she started out as a watered down pop singer from day one.

Ok now, I agree with almost everything you said with exception to Whitney. Despite her spiral downfalll with drugs, she was a hell of an vocalist and no one can take that away from her eventhough she sung pop at times.

biggrin I agree that she can sing and can sing very well. It's her choice of songs to sing that I can't stand. I never liked her wholesome image either. She's always been at the top of the list of entertainers that I can't stand.

I don't know. "Never Too Much" and "Stop For Love" are uptempo but prehaps tend to lean more toward dance pop than R&B.
