Biggest Curveballs In Music History

Every once in awhile, Musicians totally shock the fans and critics by doing something completely unprecedented or by departing drastically from the sound or style that made them popular. What are your picks for this? I think one of the most interesting, if obvious ones is There's A Riot Going On, I don't think it could be more the opposite of Stand, Life or any other prior Sly and the family stone album.

the one that readily comes to mind is that reggae fella buju banton.he used to do ragga rap{dancehall} then he suddenly voltefaced into deep roots reggae and grew dreadlocks.his popular dancehall songs are "deportees" and "make my day".
anyone here remember him?

Glenn Medeiros!

seriously, he was mega cheesy adult contempoary pop like "nothings gonna change my love for you", then he updated his sound and released the funky pop of "she ain't worth it"! He also shocked some by duetting that track with Bobby Brown!

He even danced a little in his vids.....

also the "black or white" music video premiere by Jacko was a huge event!People were shocked atr the ending of Mike smashing up cars in a street.....just before the LA roits too!

nod Exactamundo.

Then there's Meshell's Bitter, Prince's ATWIAD, TRC, and to a large degree The Truth.

And Miles Davis' repertoire was full of MAINLY curveballs.

gotta go with Neil Young's "TRANS". That wasn't from left field... it was from outer space. A brave record to make, still misunderstood. It includes some great material, especially Transformer Man.

GangstaFam

Bjork - Debut

Did anyone reallye expect this after the Sugarcubes?

New Order - Power, Corruption & Lies

When they went from being a pale immitation of their former band and became totally their own thing.

The Cure - Japanese Whispers

From Pornography to this has to be the biggest mood swing of their career.

The Man Who Sold The World, Hunky Dory, Young Americans, Low, Let's Dance, Tin Machine, Outside; all by David Bowie

I don't think anybody expected any of these.
