Do bad reviews ever make you want to buy a cd or see a film?

Maybe i'm just a bit weird but sometimes when I see a bad review of a film or cd it makes me want to go out and see it/get it. Like Swept Away (Madonna's film). Everyone said it was god awful, so I saw it and it wasn't that bad. Not that it was great but i've seen worse.

Yes. The New York Times called Gummo "the worst film of the year", and it was only June when they wrote the review! lol And of course, I went to see it and I loved it.

My favorite actor is Cameron Swayzee. I love him. I would pay a million dollars to touch him. I was born without any toes.

Absolutely! It depends on the review. Music reviewers tend to show off trivial knowledge and compare everyone to Nirvana. Movie reviewers expect every movie to touch them emotionally or at least have some arty nude scenes. Hence, most reviews are crap. But if they at least give you enough of a description of the content, you can finish reading the review with a totally different opinion than the reviewer.

For example, if someone reviewed a new (fictitious) Prince album and said "it sounds like the stripped-down crap from 1999 - too long and with too many parts" I'd think, "Cool!"

Take a look at this review of the new U2 album: http://www.pitchforkmedia...bomb.shtml

The third paragraph has nothing to do whatsoever with the new album. In fact, it doesn't transition well from the previous paragraph or to the next. It's just in there because for some reason, the writer (because they're they to write, not review) felt compelled to get his Bono treatise off his chest. Totally unnecessary! So to answer your question, yes.

I don't know about that, but I the more people dis a movie I like, the more passionate I become about it. I, for one, LOVED The Royal Tenenbaums, and most folk I know hate on it.

With music I kind of make my own decisions, but with movies it can be true. Even moreso the opposite; when a movie gets tons of critical praise, that just turns me off. Like Forrest Gump.

If I really want to see a film, I see the film first and then read the reviews second.

If I'm kind of "iffy" on a particular flick, I'll read a movie review beforehand, so I can make up my mind about which movie I'd like to see.

As far as music, I rarely trust music critics, because I find most of their reviews to be catty and off-subject (it's mostly character assessment). In that case, I listen first and maybe read a review later down the road.

some things i love more, the more it gets bad reviews. the integrity of stuff like john waters' "pink flamingos" or the latest courtney love album i believe are actually compromised when a critic writes a good review.

I thought "Anchorman" and "White Chicks" were funny as hell. Critics tore the two up though.

Hmm...no. Unless they're Plan 9-level bad reviews. Then it might be funny.

The football player in "White Chicks" made an otherwise unfunny movie a pretty funny one.

Anchorman was hysterical.

The new Courtney album WAS great. And when the reviewers say, "her voice is totally shredded, she can't sing anymore." Duh! That's what we want!

movies I tend to like the 2 star ones better that the 4 star ones that your suppose to like. Music I have my taste pretty much set, if something is compared to something I like I might check it out, but generally I know what I like and thats what i watch or buy. Movies its usally what actors are in the movie or music artists that I already like

Gummo is an all-time favorite. My friends and I used to watch it over and over. I love it, but I probably can't stand to see it again, as I've probably watched it 20 times.
