Phillip Bailey. Have you seen him on the Grammy's earlier this year with EW&F? He couldn't hit them high notes anymore. He's definitely beginning to show his age. Although I will say that the band was still undoubtledly funky.

What I don't understand is, how folks like Sarah Vaughan & Chaka mentain their vocal chops even tho they were heavy smokers too?

did you hear Chaka at this year's VMA's? she didn't sound too good at all.

that's what i was talking about. and lately she's been picking songs that are not right for her voice. sometimes she just sounds off key to me when she is live. it doesn't sound like she's into it when she sings now.

Axl Rose. Did you see him do "Welcome to the Jungle" at the MTV Video Music Awards? Yikes. As far as Bono is concerned, he has improved since his early days. Like seriously trained his voice to be amazing, which it still is. His Songwriting however has gone down hill.

Estha sounded better on record Pré-Evita!
I think she's lost a lot of warmth by
concentrating 2 much on technique or
whatever it is she's doing..She seems
2 b kinda trapped in her headvoice
at lot of times...makes her sound thin.

Listen her worst recorded singing 2 date:

'Get in2 HollyWood groove..' from 2 GAp Ad.
Perfect Illustration.

BTW, She was awful during Blond Ambition, GrayKing... cool

i agree. i liked her singing on record a lot more pre-Evita. it wasn't technically great, but she imbued the vocals with a passion and energy that post-Evita voice training has robbed from her delivery a little bit.

but her live singing is much better now than previously.

No one has mentioned the brotha that once could sing pretty good, but now
can't seem to hold a note...sounds horrible.

Stevie Wonder
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

What do you people expect?? All of the singers mentioned above are getting older. Christ, some of them are in their 50's & 60's. Do you really expect their voices not to change? Come on! rolleyes

I feel you. The only two people I can think of that have been singing beautifully for DECADES and still sound fabulous are Ron Isley and Patti Labelle. Maybe add Al Green to that list also...
I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

You've done Madonna no justice by saying this

there's a lot i like about madonna, but her live singing is not one of them. before "evita", though, it seemed like she was able to pull her weight and make up for her weak pipes with great performances and super stage presence. i believe she sang live on the legendary MTV "like a virgin" performance, and while she didn't sound fantastic, she pulled it off. same with the oscar (grammys? i forget) performance when she did the marilyn monroe schtick. it was great, and her voice didn't get in the way. but take for example the performance of "ray of light" she did with lenny kravitz on the MTV awards...awful! painful! hideous! and i've noticed that her rickety pipes have gotten in the way of her live performance ever since, unless she's lip synching, which i guess kinda speaks for itself.

I agree with you concerning that awful performance of "Ray Of Light" with Lenny Kravitz. She sounded like shit. But to be fair, that song just doesn't work in a live setting. It's a hard song to sing. The Drowned World Tour version was also disappointing imo.And I also recall her singing it on "Oprah" and it was less-than-spectacular.

I agree. On the 'Re-invention Tour',her vocals on songs like "Deeper And Deeper","Lament" and "Crazy For You" were superb. She sounds better on the more "poppier" songs and ballads,as opposed to the more techno-styled tracks, which rely on alot of studio gimmickry and are obviously harder to sing.

I was watching some special yesterday on PBS with The Blind Boys of Alabama featuring Mavis Staples and I was like shake

I know she's a contra alto, but homegirl sounded like Tone Loc with a sore throat. I was so saddened to hear her struggle with her notes. It like her voice just up and left her. Poor, poor Mavis. cry

MJ,,,,didn't go downhill but its different than say circa-Thriller.

It's different with age, is all. If you listen to The Way You Love Me which is a recent recording from the box set you'll hear that his voice is as beautiful and as clear as ever.
