Where to start with Ravi Shankar? Okee doke, I just ordered "Three Rajas" and "Transmigration Macabre" from Amazon.com for cheep, but I have little idea what I'm getting myself into.
I love sitar and tabla. I love Indian music. Every time I hear a Ravi Shankar recording, I go nuts for it. I guess I could just close my eyes and point to something and be happy. my only fear is that i'll pick out some horrible album he might have released in the 80s or 90s where he experimented with overproduced, overly new-agey, oaty-mealy synthesized crapola. i want my raja uncut, dammit. i feel pretty confident about "three rajas" since it was recorded in 1956. i mainly ordered the other CD because it has a track on it called "anxiety". anyone know much about ravi shankar's music, or at least enough to point me to some good titles?

just bits and pieces of it. i always enjoy what i hear/see. That is pretty much all I am familiar with at the moment.Ive wanted to check him out further as well... I understand your concern about the 80s/90s thing... Every thing from that era is so tinney... "...all you need ...is justa touch...of mojo hand....."

it's amazing that a man whose work is so passionate and intense and spiritual gave birth to the queen of beige music. nothing against her - she's great if you like her style and i know she's very talented - but it's like night and day. i remember reading that she and her father aren't close at all...

Yeah , i read that too
I like her music , but you have to be in the right mood for it I only heard her father once , i think Can't really remember much from it "This is probabaly not an interesting contribution to this thread edit" [Edited 1/17/05 21:28pm]

Nope Anxiety, but I want to know too. I am considering going to see Ravi and Anoush in the spring at the SF Jazz Festival. Have you ever seen him live?

Now I can give you a couple of pointer in this domain my friend If you love tabla music then check out Zakir Hussein (sometimes referred to as Ustad Zakir Hussein). The bonus to this artist (atleast for you anyway!) is that not only is he a renowned tabla LEGEND (pronounced "tahb'la"), but he has done loads of instrumental collaborations with your man Ravi The only thing is though, like you mentioned before, there's a lot of trash experimental stuff out there too which you have have to sieve through on the albums , but do check out Zakir Hussein! The tabla beats are hypnotizing N.B. As always baby boy, the first piece of advice on Indian music is absolutely free. The charges are 1,500 Rupees a sentence here forth "..My work is personal, I'm a working person, I put in work, I work with purpose.."
