Regina - Baby Love (a afake Madonna?) I saw this video by this girl named "Regina" on VH1 Classics with a song called Baby Love.
She was really tryin 2 get her Madonna "Lucky Star" trype groove on, but as I guess it turned out she was a one modest hit wonder...does any1 have any info on her? Straight Jacket Funk Affair

the song was written by Madonna collaborator (co-writer/producer) Stephen Bray. Madonna passed on the song and Bray did it with Regina. "Awards are like hemorrhoids. Sooner or later, every asshole gets one."

aaaah.. thanks! I wish she did do that song instead. Nah...by 1986 (when this song was released) Madonna was trying to get away from mindless bubblegum dance tunes. She began doing more mature stuff like "Papa Don't Preach" and "Live To Tell".A track like "Baby Love" is cute, but not very substantial.

Regina was disscussed a while ago on here. I think it was a kind of surprisngly lenghty topic. Might be worth looking up (does the search button work over here or am I doing something wrong). Anyway, it's worth noting that Dannii Minogue also did this song a few years after (not sure when) and it's on her singles collection.

You're very right and that's what I thought when they said Madonna was supposed to do it...but keep in mind, she also did very mindless "Jimmy, Jimmy" that same year as well as the very innocent girl groupish "True Blue" (sort of in the same vein). I think the bigger deal might have been that she wasn't a writer on it and while it was fine for an outsider (not sure who wrote most of "Papa Don't Preach") to write Madonna a song, I think it would have looked strange for Madonna to be doing a song co-written by a collobrator with no input by her. I think that might have been a small part of it, with Madonna wanting to co-write all of her songs.

I liked her follow-up single, "Beat Of Love" better. I still have the 12" single somewhere.
