And the headliner for Super Bowl 2005 is...

Paul McCartney

McCartney to headline Super Bowl show
Sunday, November 21, 2004 Posted: 11:11 PM EST (0411 GMT)

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Former Beatle Paul McCartney will be the featured performer at the next Super Bowl halftime show, and organizers promised there won't be any breast baring this time.

Last February's broadcast on CBS in which Janet Jackson's breast was bared during a duet with pop star Justin Timberlake spurred hundreds of thousands of complaints to federal regulators. The incident was blamed on a "wardrobe malfunction."

National Football League spokesman Brian McCarthy told Reuters Sunday there won't be any such malfunctions during the 12-minute performance, which will air February 6 on the Fox network. The event will take place at ALLTEL Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida.

"We're very cognizant we'll be under spotlight with this year's halftime show and we've looked at all facets of the show including talent selection, song selection and costume selection, to ensure we wouldn't have a repeat of what happened last year," McCarthy said.

"We're very comfortable that this year's show will be acceptable to a mass audience and won't have any issues."

CBS was fined $550,000 by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission after the last show, but Viacom Inc. co-President and CBS Chief Executive Leslie Moonves planned to fight the fine.

This will be McCartney's second Super Bowl appearance. He performed in 2002, the first Super Bowl after the September 11 attacks.

"There's nothing bigger then being asked to perform at the Super Bowl," McCartney said in a statement. "We're looking forward to rocking the millions at home and in the stadium."

Watched by more than 144 million viewers in the United States last year, the Super Bowl is the nation's highest-rated TV program and the most-watched single-day sporting event.

Finally, somebody with some freakin' talent who doesn't have to lip synch or be half naked in order to get people to buy his cd's. Great choice. A REAL artist/musician! Can't wait. Although I wouldn't be surprised if they also add some teeny bopper lip synching loser to perform first in order to satisfy the demand of the brain dead masses.

well, except for the fact that mccartney was a very vocal kerry supporter this year and actually ended a live performance of 'let it be' with "let it be...kerry!" disbelief

actually, you can't get much more liberal, white-bread and bleeding-ponytail baby-boomer than this.

No, I meant "conservative" as in "ain't gonna show titty or sing songs about sex", not politically conservative.

We might as well get used to seeing folks like Paul McCartney on the Super Bowl halftime shows. After Janet's "stunt",I doubt that they will EVER ask a "sexy" artist to perform. The shows will become safe and conservative, with folks like Eric Clapton and Barry Manillow being asked to perform. But I have no problem with that. There's a time and place for everything, and a sexy,breast-baring performance feels out of place during a family event like this anyway lol

But we'll always make room for the half-naked cheerleaders. Yay for double standards.

I wonder if the network is going to "clean-up" the advertising, too, since it's such a "family-oriented broadcast? Oh, I also wonder if the professional cheerleaders will be outfitted more conservatively to avoid any possibility of accidental breast exposure with the decollete "uniforms" that they usually wear? And of course their choreography is going to have to be "modified" to EXCLUDE any "bumping and grinding" and/or pelvic thrusts: God forbid the children be corrupted with ANY type sexual innuendo. Who knows what the little rascals might do??? wink

one year of low ratings...maybe two...and you'll see fun people scheduled to perform again. its all about advertising dollars.

I totally agree. What a nice surprise this is and I can't wait to see Sir Paul perform. Someone with real talent who isn't yo, yo, yoing me to death or showing me their tits while they lip-sync! Excellent choice!

Wasn't referring to Janet. If you feel the need to bring her up and beat up on her, go right ahead.

What I was referring to is the fact that the networks are going to the other extreme with this (for now). DavidEye's claim that this was ever a "family event" is utterly spurious, considering the cheerleaders alone. Only last week, Nicolette Sheridan's exposed BACK riled up a bunch of idiot viewers (although I have a hunch it was more the racial aspect of her getting it on with a black football player), so now we've got Sir Paul which is about as non-confrontational as you can get.
