RICK JAMES ESTATE NOTHING TO SING ABOUT: Legal problems reportedly ate into finances.

*According to court documents obtained by “Celebrity Justice,’ the estate of Rick James is worth less than $250,000, despite a discography that includes a substantial amount of million-selling records.


Sources told "CJ" that his legal battles are what depleted his estate. For example, James reportedly paid $1.8 million to a woman who sued him after he pleaded no contest to assault.


Attorney Steffeny Holtz, who once represented James and is now the lawyer for Ty James, one of the late singer's three children, told "CJ" that his music will generate lots of income for his heir for decades.


"You can't just look at that number," Holtz said."That's a number that moves all the time. Every time they play ‘Super Freak’, it generates income for the estate."


Holtz cites a project with Kanye West as one potential money-earner.


“There's a lot of music still that's going to come out," Holtz said. "And you'll hear it, and it is good stuff. There are some surprises in store."


Holtz says a foundation is being considered in Rick’s memory and as previously reported, a biography of the singer is in the works, titled, "Memoirs of a Super Freak."

Meanwhile, the coroner's report listed cocaine, meth, Valium and Vicodin in his system, concluding that James died from a heart attack.

Drugs are expensive, you know. I'm sure a lot of his income went towards that, especially in the 80s (although it looks like he didn't actually kick the habit(s) )

I hope his kids and other family hire great lawyers to find every bit of music and assets from Rick's estate, they deserve everything that's coming to them. Even with all of his legal troubles, I would have expected he was worth more than this.

I surfed the web many times right after his death for info. Yahoo News had pictures of the funeral and the guests. One of the pictures was a man making a press statement outside of Rick's apartment. I was shocked as hell to see that a man that once lived in Mickey Rooney's old house ended up living in an average everyday apartment. I also saw on one web site a few months before his death, that he was auctioning off a lot of his personal items.

This is true.I read somewhere that Rick spent like,4 mill on drugs in about 2 years.That may not be accurate,but he did spend a lot on them.I feel confident that Rick's fam will be ok financially.
