Well, Meryl is an incredible actress (watch the "choice" scene in Sophie's Choice), so she's OK in my books.

I really don't get why people say Meryl Streep is such an incredible actress. I mean, maybe I'm missing something but she doesn't seem any better or worse than Sharon Stone, Halle Berry, or Cameron Diaz. I think it's just something that has become the thing to say when talking about her.

HAving said that, I cant' say i really disagree with your list all that much Camille! Good job!

Have you seen Sophie's Choice? It will change your mind.

Take away the fashion trends, the popularity, their influences, the bands they influenced, the suicide, all of it and they're still a fucking great band. They just are.

I totally agree with you on that. Other musically overrated people I'd list are

The Grateful Dead-Booooring

Led zeppelin-ripped off a ton of their riffs...there's more I could say but I'll leave it at that

Green Day-I know plenty of people who disdain "pop-punk" and yet like these guys. I laugh inside at the irony

Lenny Kravitz-He's pretty hated here on the org, but you forget how much the ignorant general public doesn't realize how unoriginal he is

Dr Dre-Snoop Dogg nothing, THIS is the most overrated hip-hop artist of all time. His seminal album is just a bunch of p-funk loop samples with crappy new rhymes, most of which he doesn't even provide. Sure he's produced a lot of people, but that doesn't make him a great producer anymore than Diane Warren is a great songwriter.

Elvis Presley-A great singer, a great performer, but not really an artist. Considering he didn't actually have any part in writing any of his songs (the few credits he was given were purely business negotiations), I hardly think he should be held in as high regard as he is. "undisputed" king of rock n' roll? hardly.

Bob Dylan-Don't get me wrong, he is great, but he's still overrated.

Halle Berry was at her best in Monster's Ball BUT they should have demanded she gain weight and wear unflattering clothing for that role. A Revlon model with this incredibly taut, gym-toned body in the poor deep South was incredibly distracting. Apparently Queen Latifah was in the running - I think she would have done a better job.

Whoopi's early standup work was brilliant. She's all over the place with her career, but can you really call raw talent overrated?

I'm beginning to think Madonna is underrated,if anything.

Bob Dylan overrated? NOT.

Oh Lord, did she ever - I'd never really expected to enjoy a Meryl Streep performance. I'd consigned her to the "worthy, talented but not for me" file, but she Rawked in that film - dare I even say, she was dead sexy in it as well.

(shrug) I don't think there's any mystery to it. smells like teen spirit is the single most exciting rock song of the last twenty years. Strip away the memories of the dreary sub-metal grunge bands that followed them, the trashy wives and the drugs, and you're left with an absolutely thrilling song and a couple of fairly astonishing albums.

If the rave reviews for Britney Spears and J. Lo don't stop soon, I don't know what I'll do with myself! When saying someone is overrated, shouldn't they be thought highly of? I'm a moderate Spears fan but I don't think of her as anything more than an occsaional seducative booty shake and a fun dance pop song here and there. She isn't highly rated.

Are we talking of the same pop-crap producing Madge? eek

She's crap-- She's paris hilton's predecessor, with the musical talent of Millie Vanillie, Ashlee Simpson, JLO, and a shit sandwich.
Im tired of people putting a battery in her back-- just let her skanky ass go back to Michigan (YES, MICHIGAN), with that fake English accent.

Well, I thought the sex scene was pointless and completely gratuitous as it was. 90 seconds of Halle carefully obscured by chair legs? Come on. rolleyes

I know. Sometimes it's just a simple reaction to music. Either you like it or you don't. But when someone seems to have their mind made up in such an extreme way, I sometimes like to know why they love or hate something so much.

Well, I'm not dead set against them, although I am stunned by the critical reception they got (and I'm sure you've experienced that type of shock with other artists you didn't appreciate). I was never a fan of grunge (not my thing), and I didn't find Cobain to be all that profound or interesting. Maybe that helps shrug.
