I love Mahalia Jackson. To say she can "sing" is a gross understatement.
She can sing you into a car accident.

Elvis - Amazing Grace 2 Disc Set
That has all his gospel recordings. A good mix of 'white' and 'black' gospel. "Milky White Way" from 1961 is superb! Did you know that Elvis only won 3 Grammy's? All of them for his gospel recordings. Just a little trivia for ya

In walks in "The Fire Baptised Roosevelt DeVille" ... Gospel music is the very basis for which soul music was founded upon. As the son of a minister, I’ve always loved gospel music and the emotion delivered in it. Anyway, back to your question…I love The Clark Sisters. To me, they are the true essence of what soul is…just sanctified! I would suggest getting these albums by them (for a drive-by history lesson). Some of these may be kind of hard to get your hands on and may be costly because they’re either out of print or on vinyl/cassette, but it’s well worth the trouble of finding them (I would suggest eBay). You Brought The Sunshine-the album of the same title song that was their biggest hit to date. It was even being played in the clubs back in the day! This may be the song you’re referring to. Is My Living In Vain Sincerely-My favorite album by them and extremely rare!!!! Heart & Soul Bringing It Back Home-the live VHS is even better! Here are some other albums worth getting… Walter Hawkins & The Love Center Choir Love Alive-contains “Goin’ Up Yonder” with Tramaine Hawkins on lead Walter Hawkins & The Love Center Choir Love Alive II Aretha Franklin Amazing Grace The Richard Smallwood Singers As you can see, I’m really into the old school gospel from the 70s/80s, but for more contemporary artists I would suggest the following… Mary Mary Incredible Karen Clark Sheard 2nd Chance Twinkie Clark Home Once Again…Live in Detroit Donald Lawrence I Speak Life

I could partially understand your reason why, Harley; however, it's the foundation for which Aunt ReRe, Angelia Winbush and some of your other gals came up in. If not for the message in the music, the history alone should be intriguing, IMO.

HEY!!! you two Don't make chickin get the belt Family plays nice together I'm finding that it's an epidemic the way people react half-cocked after either not comprehending what they read, or not understand the context. Both, in the worst case scenario. We've all misread things, but to see it done so many times on this site is a bit disconcerting. Otherwise you know I'm a lamb. This post not for the wimp contingent. Check out Dorothy Love Coates! She was a member of The Original Gospel Harmonettes in the 50's and 60's, and also recorded solo albums. She sounds like she's really pissed off when she sings...it's great!
And of course also Rance Allen Group - the male equivalent, kind of.
