The 80's changed music forever. And now are making a comeback. Look at all the 80's music samples that are used nowadays. Artists are taking pop, rock and new wave and making it into hip-hop/rap. Hands down - the 80's were, are and will be king.

clapping I agree wholeheartedly with what you said. smile

I'm very shocked at the number of people who thought that the BEST music came out in the 80's. I think a lot of people are confusing their personal musical coming of age with quality music..I think that the 80's is far less superior musically than the 50's, 60's or 70's. In the 80's, soul music became SOUL-less, pop music became way to packaged and rock music became more of an image than a musical entity. Not to say that there wasnt crap in the 70's and previous decades but the 80's was way too full of crap music, in my opinion. Now, I'm not an old person. I'm only 24 but I can appreciate the fact that some of the most influential music ever made came out in the 60's-70's. Before there was a Prince, there was Stevie and Jimi, before Whitney there was Aretha, etc

But you had to know that was gonna happen. smile Most people revere the music they grew up listening to, and when you consider who this site is dedicated to, and the demographic that brings, you realize a lot of what you're gonna get.

Part of my youth was spent in the '80s too, but in the context of what came prior to it, I agree with you wholeheartedly. A whole lot of the '80s output just sounds dated today in comparison to a lot of music prior to that decade. If not for Prince's output during his prime it would almost, ALMOST be inconsequential to me. As it is, I like a good chunk of music that came from the era of Reaganomics and big hair, barf but I certainly do not hold that plastic era in greater esteem than previous ones.

Well, I disagree with what you said about 80's music, but you have your right to your opinions too. Loving 80's music had nothing to do with my "musical coming of age", I like music from that decade because it was a lot better than the crap that came out in the 90's and now with the new millineum. 80's music was fun, catchy, and great to dance to. Most of the music that came out during that decade was great, unlike music you hear on the radio today, which sucks ass. barf
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

The 70's - There's too much quality and quantity in this decade that no other decade can match.

I came of age during the 1980's and 1983 was my big coming of age year musically, but I have to admit that the 70's was by far the best musical decade. It gave us the best of the Stones, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, album rock, the great singer-songwriters (James Taylor, Elton John, Billy Joel, Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell), funk with real horn sections, soulful R&B, disco, punk, early new wave and early hip hop. The 70's was stylisically the most prolific decade, and most of the music created then still sounds fresh today. I loved the 80's music, but I admit that most of it sounds dated and soulless compared to the 70's.

Granted, every decade has it pieces of crap (e.g., Ethel Merman goes disco, Disco Duck), but for the most part, even when artists stumbled and fell musically during the 1970's, they did it attempting to stretch boundaries. Most of the crap since then involves artists being too safe and perfoming what everyone else is doing.

I love the 60s (Motown, soul music, classic rock), 70s (classic rock, disco, funk), 80s (New Wave, synthpop, hip hop, hair bands, and 90s (alt-rock, electronica, hip hop, grunge) almost all equally, but the edge has got to go to the Fabulous 80s! I was born in '79 and the music of the 80s holds an incredibly special place with me! I listen to 80s music all the time and reminds me of being a little kid! You gotta love THE BIG 80s! biggrin

I love the 60's, 70's and 80's

Its funny. I run 20 years behind. When I was a teenager in the 80's, aside from prince and related and a few other groups. I was listening to stuff from the 60's. In the 90's I was in my big 70's funk phase, getting into george and related, plus all the great 70's rock bands. Now I'm back to the 80's, never left prince, but I'm playing groups now that i didn't have a big interest in from the 80's when they were popular

nod Agreed. You beat me to the punch. I was just about to say 60's-80's b/c the 90's to present is nothing but a repeat of those musical decades. It's funny how time repeats itself.

The 80's

It's a landslide!

The 80's brought us the very best music from Michael Jackson, Prince, the whole POP music british invasion - which brought us Culture Club, Men at Work, Thompson Twins, Tears for Fears, Duran Duran, etc The rocking females like Cydni Lauper, Madonna, Laura Branigan, Pat Benetar, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston. The original post J5 boy band - New Edition. Also, the classic No Jacket Required - Phill Collins, Street Songs - Rick James, Sting/Police, Stevie Wonder - Hotter Than July album.

The birth of hip hop - Kurtis Blow, Run - DMC, Slick Rick, Whodini, Bizmarkie, KRS One, Big Daddy Kane....the list goes on and on.....and on. The 70's is a close second because of the birth of the Motown era, and the Funk.

The worst decade for music is the one where in now!!! mad

U turn to award shows and guys like Petey Pabloy and Chingy are considered stars because they have a good gimic and make their words sound different. What a big contrast from 80's stars Rick James, Lionel Richie, and Prince.

And no, I'm not hating on Rap - just making a point. Their is no originality in music anymore - it started in the 90's and it's getting even worse. Their are no artist to rally behind anymore (except for Prince and a selected few) because they all seem like snobs and criminals. Just like the athletes! (fighting fans and taking steriods) Too many scandals!

Am I right? It's all about getting the hot producer of the moment (at least in R&B and Rap) and promoting the hell out of an album until it's released (see Brandi) and then U hear nothing more about it.

Basically, the young people (teenagers) determine what's hot and popular. I guess it's always been that way? When we were teens and listened to Prince, I'm sure our parents hated it. But damn, Prince is talented and Chingy is not!

Usher is like the Michael Jackson for the teens of today. Too bad they missed out on the Thriller era - that's why we don't trip off Usher on this website.

Man, when I get started I could write about this stuff forever....sorry.

Well, I'll give you that on the hip-hop thing, but Cyndi Lauper? Laura Branigan? Phil Collins? (who was also around in the 70s with Genesis) whofarted

To each his own I guess. shrug

God-damn! Everyone is so used to only what they recognize, they don't think their own farts stink.

Let's see: 60's Brits - Beatles, Stones, Cream, Who, Pink Floyd
vs.
80's Brits - Culture Club, Men at Work, Thompson Twins, Tears for Fears, Duran Duran

or: 60's females like Grace Slick, Janis Joplin, Supremes, Tina Turner, Sandy Denny
vs.
80's females like Cydni Lauper, Madonna, Laura Branigan, Pat Benetar, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston

and on and on.....

(BTW, the birth of Motown is decidedly in the mid 60's)

I agree 100%! This decade is shaping up to be the WORST decade for music in a long long time (with some exceptions). Most of what is played on the radio is complete trash. Sometimes, when the radio is on, I race to the system to change the station because what I hear is so awful.(and Im only 25 years old) neutral
