That's not a "rap." She is singing S.E.R.I.O.U.S.. Only Madonna had treated guitar popping in and out of songs? Didn't Prince do that along with everyone else in the 80's? I didn't know Madonna invented "rapping" at the end of a song rolleyes

Well, I can see that there's no point arguing with you. I guess just because Gwen Stefani herself said that Madonna's first CD was a big influence on the sound of her album doesn't mean that she was really influenced by Madonna, does it?

I'm not saying that Madonna invented any of those sounds on the song, doesn't mean that the song can't be Madonna influenced.

We're not talking about the whole cd, just this one song

The eighties are all over this album, but Serious is (seriously) very Madonna-ish (ok it reminds of Nu Shooz and Jody Watley as well but who did they copy??) just like The real thing is very New Order and Long Way to go seems a (decent) reject fron "The love below". But all the elements in this album (eighties, hip-hop, R'n B) are put together very well and that's what finally counts.

Who did they copy??? Are you serious? Am I the only one who remembers the 80's? Nu Shooz and Jody did not copy Madonna. Madonna wasn't the first dance/pop female artist for fuck's sake. You people act like she was the first for everything. Keep in mind, all of that music from that era was pretty much alike and it had to do with the composers and producers that created the music, not the people singing it.

Please, be quiet. Probably I'm older than you and I remember the eighties very well. Yes, these acts copied Madonna. Certainly she did not invent that sound but she was the first act to reach worldwide success with it so everyone started imitating her hiring composers and producers who made that kind of music (otherwise, Jody Watley would never have worked with Patrick Leonard). Anyway, I love Jody, Madonna, Gwen, every pop act in the world, so don't get nervous. And, no, I don't think that Madonna was the first for everything.

No you didn't. Who do you think you are telling me to "be quiet" I am entitled to my opinion just like you are entitled to yours. You being older doesn't make you better or smarter or more knowledgable about anything. Maybe you can be pompous and elitist with other people, but not with me. No one was imitating Madonna in the 80's. That's like saying people hired Timbaland because they wanted to imitate Missy or Aaliyah or that people hired Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis because that want to imitate Janet or that people hired Dallas Austin to imitate TLC. It's ridiculous. How dare you!

btw, I just sent Jody an email asking her if the only reason she worked with Patrick Leonard was because she wanted to sound like Madonna. Well see what she says

I agree with what you said, except for that part about nobody imitating her in the 80s. There were quite a few - Stacey Q, Martika, Samantha Fox, Tiffany, Cathy Dennis, etc.

So, as we are both entitled to our own opinions why do you insist on mine being ridiculous?
Give my regards to Jody. I won't be surprised if she replies (if she does at all) "no" or "Madonna who?"
And when I told about Madonna's influence on Gwen's "Seriuos" I was referring not only to the song but also to her vocal style. Sorry Janfriend but that one has been imitated to death for more than twenty years.

I finally brought the album and it's very good. It grows on you. I dig What You Waiting For, Rich Girl, Serious, We've Got A Long Way To Go, and Harjuku Girls. I appreciate that she was honest about the album. It's just a dance album an a very good if not great one. She truly loved the 80's cause it's all over the CD and it made me like it even more.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Here's what Jody wrote me:

Thanks for writing. To begin with, I began as a recording artist
"before" Madonna! As a member of the group Shalamar as a teenager.
Secondly...did you know that I worked with David Fincher on my "Real Love" and "Most of All" videos "before" Madonna....and I am told that she wanted to work with him after after seeing the work he'd done with me! She did "Express Yourself" and rocked a similar black suit...that I'd already featured in "Real Love"!! Did you know that as a Soul Train dancer we were vogueing back in the 70's?!!!! It was just called "posing".. featured in my "Friends" video, where I featured Jean Paul Gaultier couture...prior to "Vogue" (which I really thought was hot nevertheless)... long story short...there are so many things I've achieved just by doing my own thing...and really not trying to be like anyone.I rarely get the props I deserve for a lot of the trends I started ...but I understand it historically speaking! Patrick Leonard sent me the song "Most of All" and I really liked the song. It's one of the few songs I recorded, that wasn't written or co-wriiten by me. That's the reason.
JW

She didn't request to to work with Patrick. He sent her the song.

lol It is a cool CD, but the note from Jody is kinda funny only because a lot of people were voguing before Madonna. Thanks for sharing, Janfriend. smile
