'pet sounds' - what's the big deal?

hey

I've bought this album a couple of weeks ago cause i got tired of hearing everybody say it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Even though I really enjoy the album and think it's a very strong showing...I don't see why people keep saying it's like the best album ever and stuff like that. I think it's good but I don't think it can stand toe to toe with for example...the velvet's debut album, the doors, lou reed's transformer, ziggy stardust,...So what am I missing here...why is this album such a huge deal?

It was not in vain...it was in Minneapolis!

The only interesting thing is that it should have been the American answer to Sgt. Pepper..... There is no answer for Sgt Pepper.... wink

imagine "pet sounds" with "good vibrations" included eek as he was originally going to do.....there would be no argument if that song had been included.

I'm sure hearing it for the first time in 2004 doesn't help, it was light years ahead of it's time when it was released.

may not be the best ever, but keep in mind that it came before all of those albums that you listed, and inspired the Beatles to go in a more adventurous, daring direction. and the rest is history.

i'm not great fan of the Beach Boys, or even Pet Sounds itself (i've heard it a few times), but i recognize how revolutionary it was for the way popular music is made and what is expected of it, at its best.

Listening to it right now
I think it's cool !!!

Is it right that the whole album only lasts 33.05 minutes ?
(i downloaded it as 1 track , and it doesn't have trackinfo either ,
that kinda sucks)

(I know that many albums from back then have a much shorter playing time
than albums nowadays)

Also the sequence of the songs is different from the remastered version

it's true Pet Sounds inspired the Beatles (Paul McCartney who was present at the recording of several cuts from the Pet Sounds album) to go beyond the barrier that Brian Wilson created at that time.Wislon in turn was inspired by the Revolver album to create Pet Sounds.. go figure
just listen to the music and the harmonies of the voices... Now imagine you're in 1966!! Yeah that's right it sounds really new and lots of new ideas too! the music is a world of it's own.Listening to it these days is still an experience, it shows us that creativity is a force to be reckoned with.

Even John himself said, "I, too, play a guitar. And sometimes, I play the fool." That said, I'd like to say to Lennon (not that this will mean anything to him but) - you are one of my favorite orgers.

Sometimes I think the story behind the album (Marvin's Here, My Dear), or the fact that it inspired some other legendary album (Pet Sounds, meet Sgt. Pepper) is all it takes to impress some listeners. As if they're supposed to be impressed by it because of consequential circumstances of the making of the work, which in turn makes them discuss those circumstances over the work itself a lot of the time.

you're onto something there. but while i couldn't really care less about the Beach Boys or this album, i can appreciate its importance.

similarly, i couldn't give a rat's patoot about Chuck Berry, but i realize how important he is, and can respect that and enjoy him and his work on that level.

nod Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" is another one. The "break-ups" have taken on legendary status over the years , not at the expense of the music, but come on....it's hardly the event they should be remembered for. neutral

Im more interested in knowing how they drove 4 perfectly good guitar players completely bonkers over the years lol

I really don't give a crap about it's importance, relevance or it's place in rock'n roll's musical canon. All I know is that I love it.
