I fear that somehow satellite radio will somehow increase in negative music being played. I think that it will be linked to today's cable television. There will be less censorship and vulgar lyrics will increase. It may have some small perks but I genuinely feel that it will turn over to the "dark" side once it takes off.

Depends on whether they can survive off of their subscriber base.
(And who the majority of that base is.)

If not, and they have to "bend over" and get pimped by the industry, you're probably correct.
It'll then become a question of follow the money once again.

Shiiiiit, I've heard discussions like these from RADIO DJs(not to mention: ON AIR). I mean really, DJs feel frustrated & disable to make an action, let alone us common folks.

These discussions are uplifting abit,,but I don't let 'em go to my head coz I know what will happen next.

As VinnyM27 mentioned earlier, satellite radio might be a viable alternative.
(although not a free one)

Hopefully by the time I get into a position where I really need to get a satelite radio (to hear Howard), I'll be able to afford it. I feel bad for those that can't or refuse to get it. I see it as the new cable and we all know how well that went.

I'm definately less concerned about the ganster image of music than with the low quality and varitey of it. I love dance music but you just don't hear it on radio. I really love R&B and hip hop (even the dirty stuff) but there is no vareity on the radio and artists older than 25 are damn near banned. I think satelite, by offering all kinds of vareities, might help to earse the bad image of hip hop as well by offering alternatives and letting the listenter decide.

i've been thinking of getting this (since my car stereo is already Sirius-ready and Howard Stern is going there next year), but i've heard some commercials (albeit ones put out there by the traditional radio industry) asking if satellite radio's so great, why do so many thousands of people get rid of it every month.

so i guess i'll have to check that out, eventually, if i decide to switch over.

I hear you, JanFan. I'm coming from this at the something different has to be tried to shake radio out of its complacency angle, I don't know whether or not this specific concept is a good idea. Especially considering I don't know what the new music of the legends they're talking about is like. Tho I don't take for granted that it can't be of any quality just because I haven't heard it. And you didn't hear this from me, but I don't think Bob Davis (Soul Patrol's founder) is a big fan of Aretha Franklin.

Hell, if it were up to me I'd incorporate Fishbone, Jimi Hendrix, Meshell Ndegeocello and Living Colour into some of these Black radio stations that generally shun them.

And in general the long time artists who have been around since the 50s and 60s DO deserve to be heard, even if only to see how well the audience will take to the newer music (or if they will). The same courtesy that younger performers receive.

The ageism in the music industry is completely blatant, and as GrayKing said, it's not limited to Black radio.

Bob is a big champion of older RnB artist. I am sure he is an Aretha fan. Bob is not speaking about pop stations.

When people stop listening to crap, the radio will change. It's not the radio's fault that people accept it. I have an awesome R&B station that plays "Cutie Pie" and "My Prerogative" as well as the Temps and Tops hits. I listen to that all the time, in case anyone notices. But to cry that people aren't playing the old music, I mean, boo-hoo. That's how radio's always been. People want to hear the new stuff. They can buy the old stuff.

I never said anything about Bob and pop stations. And he has specifically spelled out his feelings about Aretha after attending the R&B Foundation Awards in recent years.

Did you not type what Gary King said "it's not limited to Black radio."

What Bob is saying is concerning Black radio he not talking about pop stations.

Try going back and reading what you typed!!. I use to subscribe to Soul Patrols weekly mailing list. Trust nobody on that list has a problem with Aretha. As far as her talent is concerned.

Bob has a problem with Aretha, and said so. You don't like it take it up with him, not me. I couldn't care less.

And keep trying, like we all know you will...

One thing I like about Bob is...he is VERY outspoken and is never afraid to say exactly what he feels. He once said something that I didn't agree with, and he and I exchanged a few emails on the subject....lol...but I respect his honesty.

I did not know you had become the grammer cop for Prince. org. It is called a spelling mistake. I am sorry you can't figure that out or just can't admit you screwed up. In the all the time I was a member of Bob's mailing list I never read anything bad about Aretha perhaps that has changed but since it is coming from you I can't take it seriously.
