define better...

it get's sticky because are we looking at talent, technique, style, elegence?

Janet only does cherographed routines... do this date i have never seen Janet freestyle in a video or in concert.

Janet and Michael do really great for not having any classical training.

Paula Madonna and Jennifer Lopez studied dance for years.

Ms Abdul, Mrs Ritchie, Ms Lopez are more versitaile jazz, modern, classic ballet, tap, ballroom, street, latin and hiphop

the Jacksons are more hiphop and street.

technique wise Ms Abdul Mrs Ritchie and Ms Lopez beat the Jacksons hand down. Hand postions, toes, lines, form.

Elegence is in the eyes and beholder and depends on the style of the dance and what experience the person has in watching that art form.

the objective view would be Paul
the subjective is your choice...
so i guess its like comparing apples to oranges... and i personally like apples more.

MRS. RITCHIE?

I assume you're referring to Madonna here. And if so, here's your chance to retract the following statement:

I like Madonna's dancing way more than Janet's simply because she never does the same thing over and over. MJ, Britney and Janet all have their dancing choreographed to hell with 20 dancers backing them up.
Madonna does that rarely, the last time she did it was for her "dont tell me" sequence, which is more unique and more updated from anything done recently.

This doesn't mean that Janet is a bad dancer, of course she's not, she's professional. But after seeing "all nite (dont stop)," i thought janet has run out of ideas.

If you wanna see some good Madonna freestyle, watch the ever so hated "Ciao Italia" dvd.

well, certainly you'd have to concede the fact that Paula turned Janet into a dancer. yes, she was born into a dancing family, but if you look at her doing anything pre-Control, she's stiff and doesn't have the first clue as to how to move her body in a coherent way that comes off looking like dancing.

Madonna started ballet lessons at the age of 10. At 14 she started dancing with Christopher Flynn. At 17 she won a scholarship at The U of M for Dance where Christopher was a teacher. At 18 she went to a collegicatic dance competition at Duke University in NC. There she won a scholarship to dance with the Martha Graham school of dance. Martha is a legendary modern dance cherograhper, who herself studied under Twila Thorpe, another legend in the dance community. Once Madonna reached NY she danced with Martha for 4 months before quitting because Martha wouldn't make her first string because she wasn't with the troupe long enough. After leaving Martha Graham, Madonna left and joined the Alvin Alley Dance Troupe. Where she was second string for 3 montsh before giving up a dance carear and joining the Gilroy Bros in the Breakfast Club.

So yes Madonna a classically trained Ballerina and Dancer has better techinque... i.e. hand position, toe pointing, form and head postion than the Jacksons... who have never had classical training and therefore are not as techincally apt at dancing.

eek

Not to be a bitch or anything, but this must come from someone who knows nothing about classical ballet. I agree that someone who's had classical training may end up being a better technical dancer, but I just don't see it in Madonna. I am a classical ballet dancer, and we just don't call it "toe pointing" and "hand position" etc. I've never once looked at Madonna and been reminded of the fact that she once had some formal training. shrug

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE a trained dancer and train daily myself to keep in shape of cousre, but training isn't everything. If you can't MOVE, then you can't move.

I love the Opening to the Who's That Girl Tour. It's funny to see how far she has come in her shows. From just doing a bunch of random songs to putting the songs together to tell a story are make a statement. Also it's cool cause most of the concert is just Madonna onstage by herself. Proving she can carry a staduim arena show on her own. It's light years ahead of the Virgin Tour... and at that time light years ahead of all the other artists of the time. Cocteau Twins and and Club Nouveay turned down offers to open for the tour, thinking that one day they would be bigger than Madonna

Like fuck is madonna a great dancer.....I don't give a shit if she is trained.....infact, she did all that training and u barely see anything as good as from people like Janet, Paula, Michael etc.....just because u r trained does not make u any better.....it is what u prefer and i prefer Paula over janet.....

as fo Jennifer lopez, she seems just average to me, like Madonna.....they may indeeed have the moves, but they do not have the creativity that Paula or even MC Hammer had.....both those cats danced their asses off.....same with janet and Michael!

I agree that Madonna puts on great shows though....but she is just average to me! I hear Paula was trained? Anyway he moves have not dated and I wish people would give her more props.....look how dated those nsync moves look already?

That's cool.....as u just said, I had to make a point by comparing vids.....but as I also said, Janet has made many more vids so comparing them as video artists would be unfair.....I just realized Janfan4l has not replied.....I think she now knows that some people still remember Paula and how good she was....if not 4 her music, then 4 her originality etc.....the more I think about it, the better paula seems when compared to janet, and Paula could in her heyday take anyone down.....I hope paula is reading this biggrin

Hi,

I loves me some Janet mighty fierce, but you have to give absolute props to Paula just for versatility alone. And the fact that she's choreographed for mimes, deaf children, and that dance sequence in "Coming to America", that puts her in an elite league of dancers/choreographer. However, when it's just about dancing, I have to give it to Paula for being able to do it all. Janet is FANTASTIC, but until she puts on some tap shows and hoofs it like Paula did, Paula will be forever my girl!

biggrin André

oh wow! not the seen where Eddie Murphy was about to be married and the dancer were in African inspired clothes and danced their azzes off? I love that scene! That was some really good dancing and choregraphy. I am not in dancing but the dancing in that scene was IMHO the best I have ever seen.
