The Influence of Parents

Let's all share: What music did your parents turn you onto? I mean what bands would you never have chosen for yourself but who ended up being a big influence on your musical tastes? Here's mine:

Dad
Queen (big time)
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Santana
Dire Straits

and less so:
Jerry Lee Lewis
Eagles

Mom
Prince

Grandma
Frank Sinatra

My Father was a radio DJ with an oldies show 4 nearly 20 years, so I got a good musical education from the time I understood what music was. My Mother was in2 more contemporary stuff (which, not 2 date myself, was Disco back then). She also loved R&B and soul. Both were big Beatles fans.

None of this tops the day my Mom came home with a record that she bought 4 me. My Dad thought it was inappropriate and garbage from a "splash in the pan".

The record was "I Wanna Be Your Lover" and all bets were off after that! cool

My mom took me to see Ella Fitzgerald, but I was so young and we were sitting so far up it didn't have the influence it should have.

My parents are not really heavy into music. My mother has two Supremes albums and an Elvis album but never plays them. In the 1970s and early 1980s, she listened to country stations. In the early 1980s, my sisters got her to listening to pop radio. I also got her into some of the R&B at the time. In 1985, our city got it's first blues station and that's what she has been listening to ever since. She likes music but not enough to buy it.

My father (if you want to call him that), listened to country and classical. I don't know what he listens to now because I haven't seen him since 1985 and could care less.

My sisters listened to pop in the 1980s. Now they listen to blues and old pop and R&B.

My brother is the only one, besides myself, that bought music. He was heavy into heavy metal and still is.

My mother keeps my nephews on the weekends and they are very heavy into rap. She buys them CDs but she makes them go in the other room when they want to listen to it because it makes her skin crawl.
Andy is a four letter word.

I only got a few from my mom:
-Dolly Parton (although this counts tenfold!)
-Kenny Rogers

I got more from my sisters. They BOTH gave me Prince.

My middle sis went thru a teen-punk phas in Junior high. It didn't last for her, but because of this phase I heard many great bands for my first time:
-Violent Femmes
-The Cure
-Depeche Mode
-New Order
-Sex Pistols
-The Smiths

A special shout to my oldest sis. She brought me to the Lovesexy tour AND Rhythm Nation!!

i really didn't get any influences from my mom, since she passed away too soon for me to really figure anything out...but from my dad, the only things he turned me on to was ew & f and the commodores. everything else i got turned on to on my own.

Yeah, it's funny how much my dad's tastes diverge drastically from my own now that I think of it. He's all country rock, bluesy, rockabilly. I'm into classical, punk, new wave, classic rock, heavy metal. But he was always playing guitar in bands and absolutely loves music. I guess he just planted the love of music into my life and then I simply ran with it on my own. Where our tastes overlap, it's a major bond though. Thanks, Dad.

Oh fuck. Both of my parents knew nothing about music. My dad had like these two magnetized tapes at his car that were some b-rate eighties hits collections he had bought from some gas station.
