Prince changing his style in 1985.
Rod Stewart becoming an adult contemporary artist.
Lionel Richie leaving The Commodores and becoming an adult contemporary artist.
Babyface leaving a funky group like The Deele and becoming a balladeer.
Andy is a four letter word.

It's great - but isn't it second best to this one?

I know it's very common to praise kind of blue, but it's just so bloody good...

Kind Of Blue is certainly more important, but it doesn't make me feel the way In A Silent Way does.

Madonna 'Ray Of Light' (1998) ---who knew that Madonna was capable of making an album like this? It is a startling departure from everthing she had done before.Vocally, she sounds stronger than ever, and the songs are light years away from her 80s work.

No seriously there is nothing that could compete with Ministry's change from "With Sympathy" to "Twitch". To go from a sissy duran duranish pop project to an all-out abrasive industrial / ebm outfit with lyrics about genocide and sadomasochism - and even inventing powernoise incidentally - was definitely the biggest curveball there has been in music history.

...at least in the music history I recognize.

Has anyone heard More Specials by the Specials?

Close-minded, hardcore ska fans need not apply.

It's still a great album though. wink

Like A Prayer was quite a departure as well.

it's not really THAT different. it's pop rock made with all of the same instruments, drum machines and people (mostly). no, it's not as accessible as PR, but it's not really a million miles away from it, either.

i'd say a bigger change of style was from ATWIAD and Parade. orchestra and a horn section brought in. crisp, light, breezy sound. that's the more radical transition, if you ask me.

That photo is by Anton Corjbin - and is probably one of his most famous shots.

Apaprently, if u can find a decent resolution copy of that image, his pupils are so wide u can actually see Anton's reflection in them.

Go to his website and look in the photography section under the colour BLACK:
