Stevie Wonder, MJ, and Prince.

But what is this based on anyway? Range? Dynamics? Versatility? Inventiveness?

If so, then those 3 embody those qualities.

Call me crazy, but i think as far as this new generation goes, Britney Spears has the best voice. I never thought that until i saw her HBO special and she was sitting at the piano singing a song. To this day that performance moves me to tears. Her voice is perfect.

I am utterly speechless. You need to clean out your ears and listen to someone who can actually sing. WTF!

What do you mean? Have your heard Britney Spears? She is much better than these other so called DIVA'S out there now. Why didn't VH1 have her on Diva's but they had Jessica Simpson? She screams and makes funny faces when she sings.

She's got to have about the most feminine voice ever. Such a turn on.

I'm not sure how far up you looked but i admitted that the whole Britney thing was a joke. I actually can't stand her and she is in no way as good as Janet or Paula. I do this a lot because these threads can get very nasty and boring sometimes. At least my way is harmless fun and no one gets their feelings hurt.

It depends on if you're posing the question based on emotiveness, technical ability, or other. Here are my favourite vocalists -for varying reasons, I just like the sounds of their voices.

Dolores O'Riordan
Prince
David Bowie
Janis Joplin
Annie Lennox
Joni Mitchell
Billie Holiday
Judy Garland
Bono
Lou Reed
Mick Jagger
Cat Stevens
Willie Nelson
Kurt Cobain
Brian Molko
Elvis Presley
Tracy Chapman
Grace Slick

I'm starting to think my favorite vocalist of all time is James Brown. James Brown is easily one of my favorite artists period, but I'm starting to really appreciate just how earthy and raw and just awesome his voice is/was. Other people I'd nominate

Michael Jackson-From age 11 to 30 he was practically untouchable.

Ray Charles-Raspy, passionate, pure soul. All hail the genius

Sly Stone-Perhaps an unlikely choice but he's recently risen very high on the list of voices I love hearing. Some on this board my object, but so has Larry Graham boxed

Ella-"And with a voice like Ella's ringin' out there's no way the band could lose"

Frank Sinatra-Pure class

Bill Withers-Simple but beautiful, like his songs, and criminally underappreciated

Stevie Wonder-Was the man, is the man, will always be the man

Louis Armstrong-To me, his voice is almost as moving as his trumpet playing, which is one of those inimitable pleasures in all of music.

Aretha Franklin-got to give her some R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Mahalia Jackson-Listen to Black, Brown and Beige sometime and you'll realize why I love Duke Ellington, and why I love this woman's voice

Patti Labelle-Not as powerful as Aretha, but there's just a superb nastiness to her sound that I really dig

Norah Jones-I'm not even going to begin to evaluate her as a musician (positively or negatively) but whether you dig her composing or not, any guy would have to admitt that her voice is sexier than just about any other voice of her generation

Freddie Mercury-All hail the Queen

Little Richard-Ditto

Alright that was way to long, sue me

Norah's not sexy to me. She sounds bored and detached, and that puts me to sleep, but I guess that's just me.
