Very true . One more vote for Sananda from me!

This is a loaded question!! We all have our own likes and dislikes and we all know what sounds good to us and what doesn't. Having said that, I don't understand how anyone could say that Rick James had one of the best singing voices ever - WTF?? or even Bono for that matter. There are those that think Elvis had a great voice and those that love Celine and Barbra Streisand too. Some will even say Frank Sinatra had a great voice! I could never pick just one person, so here are a few of my favs:
Prince Whitney Chaka Sade Freddie Mercury Sam Cooke Marvin Gaye George Michael Al Green Ella Fitzgerald Luther Vandross TTD (of course)

Like has been said, it is all a matter of taste. What is sweet to one is sour to another.
That being said, i am really digging the voice of Tarja Turunen from the Finnish group Nightwish. I reckon it's almost operatic in nature. Definately sweet though.

Oh, yes. Difficult question but if you had to vote for just one, who would it be? Terrence Trent Darby? What good stuff has he released since "Wishing Well"? or am I just out of the loop? I forgot about the Biz.

My choices; I'm surprised no one's mentioned some of these yet:
Sam Cooke (the DEFINITION of SMOOTH SOUL) Marvin Gaye Tina Turner Barbra Streisand/Whitney Houston (technical perfection and purity) David Bowie (one listen to "Heroes" confirms this) Annie Lennox Stevie Nicks Doris Day (like smooth butter) Stevie Wonder Kate Bush (after she learned how to control it) Donna Summer (like Whitney but with grit and emotion) Mariah Carey (before she lost her voice) David Ruffin Billie Holiday Nina Simone Bryan Ferry Prince (the chameleon) [Edited 11/24/04 16:53pm]

I always wonder why people start these "The Best whatever" threads with no choice criteria.
This brings up comments from folks that don't like the "technical singers" which then opens the door to anything this side of a screeching banshee. Paligap figured this out (one of the better "list"-thread starters) by naming his threads "Your Favorite whatever". (climbs off of soapbox) My favorite singers? Ray Charles (defines Soul) Aretha Franklin (The Queen of Soul) Nat King Cole (Satin) Johnny Mathis (Silk) Marian Anderson (one of those "technical" types) James Brown (Raw emotion) Sam Cooke (how many singers have copped his style?) Mahalia Jackson (Gospel deluxe and power personified) Ella Fitzgerald (Voice as instrument) The above would make up my composite Super-Singer. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

Bono?
Once, yeah, he'd definitely have been in the running. His latest work shows that his voice, sadly, seems to be on the wane. Other faves, feel free to ridicule me for some of these but...: Freddy Mercury Johnny Rotten - technically speaking probably quite poor, but in terms of power and effect Morrissey - The one-time yelping, adolescent half-singere has matured into a genuine crooner of the first order. Barney Sumner (New Order) - Again, very poor in some ways, but the emotion cuts thru despite the weakness, or maybe even because of it. A good quality singing voice is of course very important, but personality and "frontman-a-bility" count for a hell of a lot too.

She always knew how to control it. You forget how young she was when she started. I think that was what it was about. With her early work she used her voice more as an instrument. Like what Bjork does today. missing word edit [Edited 11/25/04 4:26am]

Like what Bjork does today. Let's just say she got rid of the cackle. Compare original Wuthering Heights to the remake. I don't think it was merely age, I think she learned how to use her lower register to great effect.

I actually prefer the original WH. I didn't for a long time, but I think a lot of her vocals in her early years were to add effect to the song. She could sing straight even then. The Man With The Child In His Eyes and The Saxophone Song are proof of that.

Call me crazy, but i think as far as this new generation goes, Britney Spears has the best voice. I never thought that until i saw her HBO special and she was sitting at the piano singing a song. To this day that performance moves me to tears. Her voice is perfect.

And just in case you're wondering: BILLIE HOLIDAY
