G3: Vai, Satriani, Malmsteen: Who's Ur Favrit? Just saw the G3 DVD.
Awesome guitarists all. Who's the favorite of the org? Steve Vai Joe Satriani Yngwie Malmsteen My vote is a slim lead of Vai over Malmsteen, who unfortunately is bordering on self-parody with the weight, the outfits, and the corny stage moves. Satriani kinda looks like he rolled outta bed for the concert. Vai looked like he could play anything the other two could and more besides. Most versatile. Some people tell me I've got great legs...

I think all three of them are shit. Pure showmen, lots of "technical" skill, but no SOUL. Respect to Steve Vai only because he played in Zappa's band. Keep your headphones on.

You've got to be kidding...Steve Vai has alot of soul...have you ever heard "For the love of God"? That is soul man. Even Malmsteen used to have soul...nowdays he is a parody of himself...and doesn't mix up he's techniqe with soul as he used to

I used to live with a guy who had an Yngwie album - it had a song titled "I Am A Viking". I could never look at that album without laughing hysterically...he should have just called the record "Smell The Glove"... [Edited 11/23/04 15:30pm]

I'm sort of with you on this one. Although I don't listen to any of them enough, if at all, to really give an informed opinion about them. They just never held my interest. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

I thought it was Eric Johnson in that G3 dvd, not Malmsteen.
I think Steve Vai is not only the best guitarist, but a versatile and talented all around musician & songwriter. He's able to do the showoff stuff, but he plays real music with passion. And he's very creative as a songwriter. His music has themes and ideas behind it. It's not just six string masturbation (which i kind of think Yngwie is) Satriani is somewhere in between. He has some talent as a songwriter & certainly has the chops, but his music isn't as interesting to me as Steve Vai's. Anyone who dismisses Vai should check out Passion & Warfare or Fire Garden (which is half instrumental & half w/ singing). He reminds me a lot of Prince. Check this song out at:

Anyone who thinks Vai doesn't play with feeling and is all technique probably either doesn't know his music very well, is just surface listening and don't really understand what they are hearing (i.e., over their heads) or just plain doesn't know what the hell they are talking about. For the Love of God, pick up a Steve Vai album! Steve is the guitar player's guitarist. He has flare, versatility and is fucking amazing EVERY TIME he picks up a guitar. Satriani plays very pretty. He knows a great deal of theory and applies it well. He's a guitar virtuoso as are all of the aforementioned. He's a little too sultry for my tastes most of the time, but tht doesn't detract from his greatness as a guitarist. I never really cared for Malmsteen.

For those who care, Steve Vai has always given Prince his props. The NPG Music Club is a link on Steve's website. He continually amazes me. Would love to see Vai produce an instructional DVD.
