'I will always love you' definitive version, Whitney or Dolly? Hey
Just a quick question. What version of 'I will always love you' Do you think is better, the original Dolly Parton take or the Whitney houston cover? I used to love the Whitney version...until I heard Dolly sing it. Man Whitney sure sucked the life out of that song. There's (imho) much more emotion in DP's version and her voice suits the song way better. Just my thoughts. greetz Kev1n [Edited 11/22/04 13:27pm] It was not in vain...it was in Minneapolis!

Dolly. 100% Dolly.
Her voice, the simple arrangement. It's haunting and perfect. Although kudos to Whitney. Dolly even admits that Whitney's success with that cover earned Dolly her fattest paycheck ever.

Dolly
Because Whitney THE SCREAMER rids the song of subtlety.

I love Dolly's (and I really like Whitney's too).
Though if you're looking for "difinitive" I guess you'd have to say Whitney's. It's the one most people know, and the one that sold a bazillion fucking singles and albums (not to mention loaded Dolly's pockets). "Awards are like hemorrhoids. Sooner or later, every asshole gets one."

Both are excellent...
Dolly's has more subdued emotion.. Whitney sang da hell out of that song... Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I have no problem with Whitney's version, but there's something just haunting about Dolly's version and I also have a thing about hearing a songwriter do his/her own work. Never trust anything spoken in the presence of an erection.

DOLLY
I would rather listen to fingernails on a chalkboard than hear Whitney screech that song. "Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind"-Dr Seuss

Whitney's version is dynamic though, that's why her version is good. I choose the human car alarm over the mouse whisperer.

Dolly's has more subdued emotion.. Whitney sang da hell out of that song... My feelings exactly. I love both versions! Both ladies are very different singers, but IMO they both did the song justice.

I LOVE BOTH VERSIONS!!!!
I can't listen to Dolly's version though. It literally makes me cry. It doesn't help that I originally heard her version not on The Best Little Whorehouse..but in the movie IT'S MY PARTY. It broke my heart especially since the movie is about a man who's dying. Whitney tore it up too. So props to both.
