The Kinks..forgotten?

I just wondered why a great band like The Kinks is NEVER mentioned on the org.
Neither are the Faces...
These two bands were really something a long time ago! Most people talk about the 60's like it was Beatles and Stones(and then some,of course),but I dare to say that at one point in history the Kinks were just as good as the Beatles and the Faces were maybe even better than the Stones!!
Now I know I'm gonna get some strong reactions on this one,but hey,it's worth a discussion don't ya all think??

I agree, the Kinks are vastly underrated.
I love the Village green preservation society (it's their pepper's you know?)
And also Arthur is the first rock opera ever!! (yes it got snowed under by the Who but who cares, it just kicks ass)

I gave this CD to my 20 year old son a few weeks ago, and told him, "if you want to understand your dad, you should listen to this".

"Muswell Hillbillies" pretty much sums up my paranoid social philosophy, and it's also a great take on American roots music.

The Kinks were and are a great band. They still tour around from time to time. I would recommend seeing them at some point. The old farts still know how to rock & roll.

I've always loved The Kinks. They have always been the great underdog band . .with so many wonderful songs.

Sadly, they do not tour anymore as a unit--or at least have been on extended hiatus for around a decade. Ray and Dave do solo gigs here and there--and both are worth seeing.

Their future is uncertain, Ray has experienced complications from a gunshot wound early in '04 and has cancelled appearances--and Dave is recovering from a stroke this summer that left him partially paralyzed. I haven't heard any recent updates on their conditions . . .

Yes, your comments are quite true. I had forgotten about their health situations. I saw Ray many years ago in small club and he was fantastic. I hope they both recover well and get back to playing together.

Love the Kinks. I was listening to their Christmas song yesterday "Father Christmas give us some money..."

They're likie the first punk band.

But I must admit I don't know as much of their stuff as I should.

Do they have a classic record? Or should I get a greatest hits?

I started of with a 'greatest hits' one,and man was I lost after that!!
I recently read an article about them in 'uncut' just as I started to listen to them more again....The songs..their story, man it's a world in it's own!

I love the Kinks.
I just recently "discovered" them, but I can't find any of their CDs in the music stores. Only a 'greatest hits' CD here and there. sigh

I like The Kinks as well. I saw an old SNL ep. from 1981. They performed a song called "Art Lover" and I really liked it. I don't have any of their stuff but I do know about the classics 'Lola", 'All Day-All Night", and of course, "You Really Got Me." What album would u recommend me to buy get to know what this band was all about ?

Have to admit, I am basically a Kinks fanatic, so I like most all things Kinky--all of their stuff has some sort of merit in my eye--but for those of you just startin' out . .here are some recommended titles for you:

There is a very decent 2 disc comp called 'The Ultimate Collection,' which gives a not-too-shabby overview of their entire career. Whoever's behind it did a respectable job picking key songs. Definitely recommend it.

For album choices, I'd steer you toward their late-60s stuff, their 'golden era' . .

Try any/all of these:

Face to Face: This album just isn't touted enough. A fine, fun example of some of the best mid-60s pop/rock songwriting. This was the album that showed there was more to them than regurgitated variations of the 'You Really Got Me' riff. This is their 'Revolver.'

Something Else by The Kinks: Unusual, clever, very fruity, very english. Totally breeeeliant. Contains some wonderfully sweet melodies (Waterloo Sunset, etc) and some great weirdness. Not a bad song on it. The production is pretty cool too.

(The Kinks Are) The Village Green Preservation Society: Finally being acknowledged as a masterpiece by the music critic cognoscenti . .this ranks as my personal favorite. It must be said that some people don't warm to it immediately. Certainly full of quirk. It's the first that Ray produced himself, and has some odd sonics to it. There is an underlying wistfulness to the whole of it. Many shining examples of Ray Davies' knack for penning a tune that is simultaneously joyful-sounding and heartbreaking. Contains one of the most gorgeous, underrated Kinks songs ever: 'Animal Farm.' (check out 'Village Green' & 'Do You Remember Walter' for two other pieces of amazing writing)

I could go on and on adding album titles, but this is only a distilled list . .

Happy kollekting to you.

(P.S. For a great late-era Kinks platter, try 'Give The People What They Want')

There are a lot of bands like this. And I usually don't know 90% of the stuff mentioned on the org, so I guess it's my age. A new generation has come and gone.

Kinks are cool. cool

All Day and All of the Night and You Really Got Me has to be two of the most used/sampled songs ever. I've heard excerpts of both of these songs all my life in everything from TV commericals, movies to other artist sampling it for their records. I was never able to put an artist name to the songs until a few years ago. I have since heard each song in its entirety and I love them. I really love the guitar break down in All Day and All of the Night biggrin

All Day And All Of The Night

I'm not content to be with you in the daytime
Girl I want to be with you all of the time
The only time I feel alright is by your side
Girl I want to be with you all of the time
All day and all of the night
All day and all of the night
All day and all of the night

I believe that you and me last forever
Oh yea, all day and nighttime yours, leave me never
The only time I feel alright is by your side
Girl I want to be with you all of the time
All day and all of the night
All day and all of the night
Oh, come on...

I believe that you and me last forever
Oh yea, all day and nighttime yours, leave me never
The only time I feel alright is by your side
Girl I want to be with you all of the time
All day and all of the night
All day and all of the night time
All day and all of the night
