Must Have Stones Albums? Hi. I was more into the Beatles than the Stones, but I'm starting to get into them because of my brother-in-law. What are some classic, solid Rolling Stones albums that are must haves for anyone?

Start with a compilation: 40 Licks is a fairly comprehensive overview of what made and still makes them great Hot Rocks More Hot Rocks - both cover the sixties Studio albums: Sticky Fingers Exile On Main Street Let It Bleed Beggars Banquet Some Girls Their Satanic Majesties Request Aftermath (UK edition) Goats Head Soup Get Yer Ya Yas Out (Live) Steel Wheels Talk Is Cheap - Keith Richards solo album Check out www.allmusic.com for info. There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

My fave period is the late 60's/ early 70's.
I agree with starting with 40 Licks or something like that, but I reckon once you get into the albums, you could do much worse than start with Let It Bleed. Alternatively, get hold of the Four Flicks DVD set. A bit pricey, maybe, but you may get a good deal on it. It has material from all of their best albums, and whilst they can be a bit hit-and-miss live, and although it's a recent recording, so they're all wrinkled and gnarled (!), there are some great moments and it should give you a good overview of the band. Don't be afraid to delve deaper than the "hits" - there's plenty to enjoy away from the Satisfactions and the Brown Sugars and such like. Enjoy!

Don't forget the 3-CD set called "London Singles" (or sump'n like it). It's real good, if it doesn't overlap with what you've already got.
Also Tattoo You has good songs from the "Rolling Seniors". Lastly, have you seen the movie "Gimme Shelter" yet? *****************************************

The Stones have numerous good albums to choose from. I would start with the following:
Some Girls Sticky Fingers Let it Bleed Exile on Main Street Tattoo You

Actually their latest live album "Live Licks" is pretty good... lots of energy there... I at least was pleasantly surpised...

Ok. Thanks everyone for the advice. Reason I asked you all is because I felt that this was a very knowledgeable group of music lovers, and I didn't bother asking my bro because he showed me this one one time and I didn't really feel it. Plus, everyone in my fam. has their own little tastes, so ya. Why hassle, you know?
But thanks again! | |

Now that's a hard core fan! I think Flowers overlaps with the various new singles compilations (London years 40 licks...), so if you have one of them, you can spend your $$ on one of their old ones with the blues covers *****************************************

For their more recent work i'd say Steel wheels or Voodoo lounge!
Never start with a collection, it is such a shame, when you want to buy all their cd's!!! the beautiful ones, you always seem to loose

What? At how bad it is? "Lifeless Licks" is more like it. Utter pile of crap. Avoid. There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

Well, if you're gonna take it from the top, don't forget the first two: "England's Newest Hit Makers" and "Rolling Stones #2" Regarding the Stones chronology, you're correct. However the post was representative of the albums I used to have in my collection and could personally attest to. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Well I had a nice little rebuttal for you all written out but then the ORG had one of it's little "Sunday Brain Fart Episodes" and it disappeared. Needless to say, I like alot of the other songs on the album , especially that hilarious duet with Billy Preston , "Melody"..... "...all you need ...is justa touch...of mojo hand....."

This album has some cool tunes but it just didn't hit me like the ones prior. Maybe it's because they were in a transistion period for the 2nd guitar chair between Mick Taylor and Ron Wood. They sounded like they were having a good time though. Melody is an entertaining piece. Fool To Cry might be one of the better tunes they've written. My favorite on the record for my version of classic Stones is Hand Of Fate. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn.
