Hi. I was more into the Beatles than the Stones, but I'm starting to get into them because of my brother-in-law. What are some classic, solid Rolling Stones albums that are must haves for anyone?

My fave period is the late 60's/ early 70's.

I agree with starting with 40 Licks or something like that, but I reckon once you get into the albums, you could do much worse than start with Let It Bleed.

Alternatively, get hold of the Four Flicks DVD set. A bit pricey, maybe, but you may get a good deal on it.
It has material from all of their best albums, and whilst they can be a bit hit-and-miss live, and although it's a recent recording, so they're all wrinkled and gnarled (!), there are some great moments and it should give you a good overview of the band.


Don't be afraid to delve deaper than the "hits" - there's plenty to enjoy away from the Satisfactions and the Brown Sugars and such like.

Don't forget the 3-CD set called "London Singles" (or sump'n like it). It's real good, if it doesn't overlap with what you've already got.

Also Tattoo You has good songs from the "Rolling Seniors".

Lastly, have you seen the movie "Gimme Shelter" yet?

The Stones have numerous good albums to choose from. I would start with the following:

Maybe it's because they were in a transistion period for the 2nd guitar chair between Mick Taylor and Ron Wood.
They sounded like they were having a good time though.

Melody is an entertaining piece. Fool To Cry might be one of the better tunes they've written.

My favorite on the record for my version of classic Stones is Hand Of Fate.
