Justin Guarini: The Truth Hurts

No "Fun, Fun, Fun" for Justin Guarini

Wed Nov 10, 7:55 PM ET

Justin Guarini changed his hair, changed his home, changed his management. The one thing he didn't change was his luck.

The former American Idol singer, looking to rebound from movie and record flops, has seen his Broadway debut fizzle before it began, deleted from the cast of the yet to open Beach Boys-tuned musical, Good Vibrations.

Producers and Guarini were described as having "parted company," reports said Tuesday.

A spokesman for Dodger Stage Holding, one of the groups producing Good Vibrations, did not return calls seeking further comment Wednesday. Visit for more:

Good Vibrations, a fictional, fun-in-the-sun tale set to the music of the Beach Boys, is scheduled to begin previews at Broadway's Eugene O'Neill Theatre on Dec. 20. Opening night is set for Jan. 27.

Guarini, recently shorn of his signature floppy curls and relocated from Los Angeles to the East Coast, appeared with the show this past summer at Vassar College in New York.

It was only a week ago that Guarini's camp issued a press release touting his casting in the musical's Broadway company.

"I'm up for the challenge," Guarini was quoted as saying (while "flashing his trademark smile," no less). "I'm really excited. New York is definitely where I need to be at this point in my career, and the opportunity to be on Broadway is once in a lifetime."

Guarini, 26, almost made it to Broadway in The Lion King in 2001, but pursued an audition with a new, Star Search-style TV show instead.

The decision paid off: The show, American Idol, was an instant ratings hit; Guarini was an instant pop-culture player.

Even before the show's first-season finale, in which he would settle for first runner-up behind Kelly Clarkson, Guarini declared his intentions of becoming "a global mega-superstar--singer-actor-dancer" to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Then things got tricky. In 2003, Guarini's debut album, Justin Guarini, sold only about 100,000 copies. His big-screen debut, From Justin to Kelly, costarring Clarkson, grossed less than $5 million. He closed out the year by getting sued over a traffic accident, being dropped from his record label, and skipping an American Idol Christmas special for Fox.

Last March, he told Entertainment Weekly he'd hooked up with a new manager, former Jennifer Lopez guru Benny Medina, and set his sights on a new album. (He complained he hated the material he said he was ordered to record for the first CD.)

"I'm here to entertain. To bring joy to people, to bring light to dark places in the world," Guarini told EW in all apparent seriousness.

The relationship with Medina apparently didn't take, though. Last week's press release was issued by "his new management team," the Washington, D.C.-based firm of Westin Rinehart.

On Wednesday, a Westin Rinehart rep said the firm was no longer repping Guarini, and referred questions to a woman named Ina (no last name given) in New York City. Ina did not return a call.

While Guarini's Broadway dream has ended for now, Tamrya Gray's has only begun. Gray, another first-season Idol alum, made her debut Tuesday night in the musical Bombay Dreams.

Other ex-Idols are busy in record stores. New releases by six former contestants are out, or due out, this holiday season: George Huff's My Christmas EP (released this week); Clay Aiken's Merry Christmas with Love (Tuesday); Fantasia Barrino's Free Yourself (Nov. 23); Ruben Studdard's I Need an Angel (Nov. 23); Clarkson's Breakaway (Nov. 30); and, Diana DeGarmo's Blue Skies (Dec. 7).

With his schedule freed up, Guarini should have time to sample them all.

Am I the only person who has never watched a single episode of AI? Kelly Clarkson and Tamyra Gray(?) are the only two that seem tolerable and I've never even heard Tamyra sing!

Damn, it did seem a little vicious, didn't it? All I can say is that the American public got it right when it chose Clarkson. The differences in their voices is night and DAY. Clarkson is a superb, superb vocalist compared to the number two that year.

I wish him luck, but maybe he should go just into acting...

Dear Justin,

I really admire your determination to have a career in show business

but singing, dancing, and action takes more than just a smile. It takes hard

work, pracitice and most of all, talent. Regretfully you do not seem to

posess any of these qualities and unfortunatly I must request that you

go home, have some milk and cookies, and try a new career.

Love Always,

I've heard nothing but good things about Tamyra but I've never actually heard her sing.

As for Justin... something seems forced. He may have a nice smile but if you don't have "it" than it's a long hard road to forge.

i think he'd be lucky to end up on the surreal life...i see a future for him on QVC, peddling anti-inflammatories with joan rivers.

Tamyra was the only true star... she had the look down too.

I don't really like to see these people kicked while they're down, but I don't want a Justin Guarini album either. Maybe he can sing backup... time to make a career move!
