Quite a few people think it replaced hair metal with a different brand of crap, so there you are.

Well, maybe because it DID? Sure, there were tons of crappy Nirvana knock-off bands and grunge trendsters (Candlebox, anyone? lol ), but that's certainly not the band's fault...though from what Cobain wrote in his suicide note, he might disagree. shrug

I hate Nirvana. They are the definition of overrated to me. boxed

Clearly.

Clearly, you hate Nirvana, that is. Not that they're overrated. Well, to you. That much is clear. I'll make sure everyone gets the memo. smile

This is all about opinion. Don't act sarcastic because I have one. I respect that you would place this song in the Top 10. I don't understand why, but whatever floats your boat, right? shrug.

I was, erm, acknowledging your opinion? And I'm, erm, a sarcastic jackass by nature? I never thought Rolling Stone would come between us like this, usually we're so close. lol

Awww....at least we agree on that. wink hug

At least the rest of the list is not particularly offensive. I'm surprised they didn't put Lindsay Lohan on there considering the way they're going.

*sigh* "Well, I guess poor VC just doesn't get it after all. That's ok, he'll make a good addition to the musically inept hall of fame."

I don't "get it" because I don't agree with you.

Get it?

I can, however, respect your choice. Big difference.

Then why do you keep making argumentive comments when people state their opinion on this particular song/band you don't like? Okay, you hate Nirvana. Other people don't. We get it. No victimization, no alienation of VC, no dark sarcasm in the classroom. nobody's out to sew a damn scarlet letter on your chest because you hate kurt cobain, sheesh.

Arguing about Nirvana is so '90s.

But then, arguing about Dylan and the Stones...timeless.

Smells Like Teen Spirit is a great song and deserves its place on this list. It's plainly clear to me why its of importance as a rock song. It defined a musical genre, an era in time and had a huge impact on American culture. If you're not willing to see its importance, it's just because your vision of what makes great music is shortsighted. "I don't like it, so it sucks." There are a few songs on the list that I do not like. Does that mean they're not great songs? No. It means I don't like them, but I understand their validity as great songs.

It deserves its placing. I remember experiencing first-hand the impact this song made. Hair-metal was made instantly obsolete and people starting looking at each other scratching their heads wondering who "Generation X" are. Of course, it all went sour after that what with flannel appearing on fashion runways and third-rate grunge bands being signed left and right, but pop culture was changed dramatically all because of this one song (and video).

I repeat, it deserves its placing.

yes it deserves its placing for ruining music

you know what - on second thought, maybe i DON'T want nirvana on this wack top ten list, even though they single-handedly upped the ante for the quality of pop music when they came out and they wrote cool lyrics and perfectly summed up the way a lot of kids were feeling at the time...i just remembered, if it wasn't for nirvana, prince probably wouldn't have dressed in that dumb sleeveless flannel shirt or done that stagedive in the video for "the morning papers" - i blame prince's brief yet horribly silly flirtation with the grunge look on nirvana. SHAME. no no no!

i understand what RH2S is saying. there's music out there that i don't like, but i realize it has an important place in the history of pop music.

perfect example: the smiths and morrissey. hate 'em. H-A-T-E them. morrissey's voice to me is like fingernails on chalkboard, and really, i don't think the music's terribly interesting or memorable. however, i can appreciate their style and asthetic and i think morrissey's a pretty decent lyricist and i can see that they have lots of fans and that they've influenced a lot of other artists. so while i may not like them, i can't make the conclusion that i don't like them, therefore they suck. i just know i don't like to listen to them.

on the other hand, i completely freakin' ADORE the xanadu soundtrack. i think every song on that album is completely wonderful. but am i going to say it should be regarded as some all-time classic album? hell, no! lol i understand that it's cheese, and i love it because it's cheese, but i'd choose it over the smiths anyday!

there's a big difference between our subjective tastes and what we might opt to accept on a more objective level. i think that's what RipHer was saying.
