Eh. Same songs keep popping up in these sorts of lists, so I'm not shocked. I'm glad to see Good Vibrations on there. I do think that is one of the best pop songs ever written. Satisfaction always seems to end up on lists like this. Wasn't it declared the "greatest rock song" on some list a few years back? I've never understood its appeal or importance. Then again, that's my general feeling on the Rolling Stones as a group.

ahhh...another top of list...another thread full of complaints..

sorta like when you see a religion thread you just know its gonna be full of quotes.....

for once we should switch roles.....

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
--John 3:16
God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God.
--Matthew 5:8

I have shown you in every way by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.
--Acts 20:35

He who sits in the heavens shall laugh.
--Psalm 2:4

She brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped him in swaddling cloths.
--Luke 2:7

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch of their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.
--Luke 2:8-11

I'm not a huge fan of RS, but I like the top 10. # 9 can go as far as I'm concerned, but other than that, it's an acceptable top 10.

It's the guitar lick. I think Al Green put it best when he had to ask the Lord for forgiveness before describing it as "bitchin'" or something to that effect.

The Stones are great and so is this song. Al Green was right, it is a bitchin tune!

i don't get the Rolling Stone criticism as far as this list is concerned. Their editors did not compile the list. They surveyed something like 172 musicians, writers, etc.., and compiled the results. There was a blurb about it in today's USA Today.

They listed some of the artists that voted, but the only one I remember offhand is Elvis Costello.

As for the Top 10, I think it's pretty reasonable. Like A Rolling Stone deserves to be #1, in my opinion, and Satisfaction was really the song that launched the Rolling Stones. It's the ultimate down and dirty rock guitar riff.

It will be interesting to see how many Prince tunes make the survey. Considering the respect Prince gets among his peers, I would assume that there would be several of his songs in the survey.

In the latest issue of RS they list the Top 500 songs of all-time as compiled from votes by 172 critics and musicians that included Brian Wilson, Joni Mitchell, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco and others - in a special issue that hits newsstands Friday. They say this is the most definitive and concrete musical list ever assembled in the history of music journalism. The top 10 was unveiled for the first time this morning on ABC's Good Morning America.

Here's the Top 10 songs of all-time

1. "Like A Rolling Stone"
Bob Dylan

2. "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction"
Rolling Stones

3. "Imagine"
John Lennon

4. "What's Going On"
Marvin Gaye

5. "Respect"
Aretha Franklin

6. "Good Vibrations"
The Beach Boys

7. "Johnny B. Goode"
Chuck Berry

8. "Hey Jude"
The Beatles

9. "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
Nirvana

10. "What'd I Say"
Ray Charles

What are your thoughts on this? I'm curious to hear what you have to say.

OK for a start I'd have "Stairway to Heaven" , "Purple Rain" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" right up the top...

All those songs are great. Remember, great just means big or important.

I can't imagine anybody on this site doesn't know every one of them. And while we might be sick of them, they're all good songs, too.

all of those early mornings are really taking a toll on her. she looks half-asleep most of the time, and is aging much more quickly now sad it's a shame...

It deserves its placing. I remember experiencing first-hand the impact this song made. Hair-metal was made instantly obsolete and people starting looking at each other scratching their heads wondering who "Generation X" are. Of course, it all went sour after that what with flannel appearing on fashion runways and third-rate grunge bands being signed left and right, but pop culture was changed dramatically all because of this one song (and video).

I repeat, it deserves its placing.

Co-sign. That song was a monumental breath of fresh air during a time when pop music was in a REALLY bleak place. The success of that song opened up doors for so many bands that were just thought of at the time as "weird", and if it weren't for Nirvana's success, a bunch of the bands we think of as "pop" today would probably still be shuffled to the sidelines as "those weird alternative bands". Some of this may be due to music industry weaselry, but a lot of it had to do with the fact that Nirvana had just plain created an undeniably good pop album, and they had the world's attention.

Yeah, put Kurt on some lists. The boomer-era pop legends don't have to have ALL the fun, after all.

10. "What'd I Say"
Ray Charles

Seems like only recently, ahem, that this song has crept up in popularity. It's a valid entry, I'm just saying doesn't it strike you as queer that only now Ray is a hip dude to reference?

Well, maybe because it DID? Sure, there were tons of crappy Nirvana knock-off bands and grunge trendsters (Candlebox, anyone? lol ), but that's certainly not the band's fault...though from what Cobain wrote in his suicide note, he might disagree. shrug
