Most Underrated artists/albums of 2004

Ok, I figured I'd flip the script and talk about the overlooked artist of 2004.

Anyone care to join me? I think this is more fun...cmon join me.

Well, for some reason I didn't hear about him until this year so if his album came out before, I apologize, Let's just say he's underrated, LOL.

Yeah, that album's from 2002. It was a big hit up here in Canada, and I've been awaiting a followup since.

Tori Fixx
Great producer, MC, songwriter. I have all of his albums. Black.Out was fiyah.

Fefe Dobson
So underrated. Loved her debut. Can't wait for her second offering. I played the sh*t out of her album this year.

Soce, The Elemental Wizard
Turned me out with "I'm In My Own World." A very creative, leftfield guy.

Shaznay Lewis
"Open" is a great LP. She deserves more fame for it. Needs a US release now!

Miss Money
Her latest album Miss Money presents Hooka: Diary of an R&B Hook Writer WAS SO FIYAHH! G*d. Miss Money is holding down Houston so well and hardly anyone outside of Texas is paying attention. If Lil Jon & Cash Money can blow up, Miss Money deserves every bit of her fame -- she writes, produces, distributes and raps on her own cuts. www.missmoney.net

Javine
Feeling her latest LP "Surrender." Hopefully it'll see a US release?

Jamelia
Note to American urban radio: this Brit's calling you.

Anastacia
Her latest self-titled LP is sooo good and I am mad that it wasn't released in the States. I wish she'd come here and tour!

I must admit that her song "Dont' Go (Girls & Boys)" is really insufferable, but the rest of the album is quite good, and I think she's much more interesting than her counterparts. But that song is getting huge local radio play and every time I hear it I want to reach through the transmitter and strangle her. lol

In your shoes, I'd be lucky. Guess how many times I heard "Don't Go (Girls & Boys" on the radio: ZILCH. Canada is Fefe's homeland, so understandably she'll get more airplay and love there. Americans ate up Ashlee's debut this year, but here lies a girl who can actually put on great live shows, commands an audience, is only 19 and yet can't get respectable play in the states.

nod Yet another reason to move to Canada! wink

On the plus side, "Take Me Away" (which I really like) got just as much airplay.

Also, if you've seen Fefe in interviews, you'll know she's not vaccuous (cough*Avril*cough), so it's quite believable that she writes her own material. I can really see her growing as an artist over the years.

I like Amy Winehouse's album, 'Frank'.

It's sold less that 220,000 copies and I can't understand why.

She's a gobby cow though - but very funny with it. Here's a sample quote from her, explaining why she dislikes Dido...

“She’s bland. Her songs aren’t thought out, her lyrics aren’t thought out, her voice isn’t thought out. It’s background music — the background to death.”

lol

Anyway, listen to a sample of 'Help Yourself' - it's a great song! http://www.smokecds.com/cd/34928

The lyrics are hilarious too. On the track 'Love Is Blind' she defends her cheating on a boyfriend by explaining away, "he looked like you". On another track she can't understand her partner's negativity towards her and she wails, "are you gay-ay-ay?" LOL

I remember that a song from that album came up when I was listening to internet radio and I wanted to keep note of it becuase it was pretty good. Maybe I'll give her a shot. So there was good music released this year, only not by the big league stars. Interesting!

I've actually noticed that REAL r&b and hip-hop station here plays her single pretty often now (it's been about six months since that single came out, maybe more?). Funny how the actual R&B station tends to play the stuff that Top 40 ends up making huge hits way before AND then they will also play some really good stuff that Top 40 won't touch because they suck. Fascinating! I should definately get Amel's CD. Her voice and her music is really good.

Sounds like something you would. Check out my comment on it above. I'll check it out, along with some of these others. Buying new CDs from known artists this year has left me a little bit upset. I seriously don't even remember half the things I bought. Just forgetable!

Looks like some interesting choices (and the ladies are all smoking...and they should quit becuase it's bad for them!). I thought Anastacia last release (the one that was released in America and heavily discounted to boot) was good but unfornately, she just can't break into America. I don't think people want to accept a white R&B female star anymore. And some of her music (including the single) is more dance pop....and we all know that goes nowhere in America! It's funny becuase I think if people know who she is based on her success, they probably assume that she is British or European unless they hear her speaking voice. She's got a strong New York accent.

I was in the Detroit area for a while. Which station was it -- do you remember? WJLB? That's the first time I've ever heard of a radio station actually playing something from AMEL (solo) other than her hit with Groove Theory "Tell Me." What song was it? This is definitely a first. I don't listen to the radio out here in L.A. that much, but I think the only show that plays Amel regularly out here is Chocolate City with DJ Garth Trinidad on KCRW.

Anastacia has a wonderful voice. Her vocals have a certain heartiness about them that can carry a song even if it's musically uninteresting. She can make the most unappealing melody palatable -- and that says a lot.

Ever since I bought "Freak of Nature," I've taken a strong liking to her as a vocalist. Her latest LP is great, but it goes in a more modern rock direction. She enlists people like P.O.D., etc. to lace her tracks. It's less "drag queen"-esque this time out. No shoddy disco-fied tunes. "Welcome To My Truth" and "Sexy Single" show off her latest style well. "Maybe Today" is an awesome ballad and it evokes the voice I've come to love in her last 2 LPs.

Hopefully, Ana will get some stateside love in '05 or at least tour because I'd love to hear her perform these songs live. Damn, the Europeans get all of her (the shows, the singles, the guest spots)!
