So what's going on with Teena Marie?

I'm still enjoying her 'La Dona' CD and I was wondering if there will be any more singles and promotion? Has anyone heard any news? I still haven't seen the video for "A Rose Is Still A Rose"! I'm still hoping that "Honey Call" will be released as a single,I love that song!

Either go here: http://www.teenamarie.com/main.html
or go here: http://www.cashmoney-reco...hmoney.htm and click on Teena's name under the artists header.

Honey Call and.....

Teena deserves better.

I wonder why she chose Cash Money. No other imprints offering lucrative bait?

It was supposed to be a neo-soul/adult conteporary album. Alot of folks in the ORG community wouldn't understand that, but I forgive yall. Music is not all rock & roll and funk!!

The joint with Rick James - I Got U is funky
Still In Love is a tight ass slow grove.
Honey Call is funky
A Rose by any other Name - is a tight let's get our freak on, type of slow jam with Gerald Lavert
The Mackin Game is a nice neo-soul groove

Take a listen and make your decision, fuck what ya heard -

I agree with both of you. That's why I still having bought the album yet. I like the first single and I also like the duet they are playing on the radio with Rick James so I am getting very tempted to buy the album and probably will. I do LONG for some funk though!

An artist doing funk these days would be committing musical suicide. Everything on the radio these days is either slow or midtempo. That's what's a shame. I understand Teena's just trying to get paid but I wish someone else besides Prince would try to turn today's music around and get back to jamming again because the radio puts me to sleep. biggrin

"Still In Love"
"Honey Call"
"My Body's Hungry"
"Baby I'm Your Fiend"
"Makaveli Never Lies"
"I Love Him Too"
"High Yellow Girl"

I tend to favor the more jazzy-sounding tracks, and I always skip over a few of the more hip-hop-sounding songs ("The Macking Game").Fortunately, the album is mostly Teena doing what she does best....powerful R&B ballads where she sings her ass off.

The problem is,funk doesn't get played on the radio these days.Sad but true.If Teena were to do a big, funky jam like "Behind The Groove" today, she would face an uphill battle getting it played.

So true.

By the way, I was in the record store last weekend to buy Teena's new album and ended up buying the remastered version of "It Must Be Magic" instead. If you don't have it already, you need to check it out. It has a 12 minute live version of "Deja Vu" as a bonus track. I tell you, she is the only artist I know of that can sing just as well live as she can in the studio. I also picked up "Irons In The Fire", a Teena Marie album I didn't already have.

I bought that remastered 'It Must Be Magic' CD a few years ago and yes,it is excellent.Around the same time (2002),I heard that they were planning to remaster 'Irons In The Fire' as well.I'm not sure if they ever got around to it.Is your copy of 'Irons...' a remaster?

No it's not. I can always tell if a CD has been remastered because the volume is much louder. On "Irons In The Fire", I have to turn the volume up to match "It Must Be Magic". Actually, I got a great deal on both CDs. "It Must Be Magic" was on $9.99 and "Irons In The Fire" was only $6.99.

They seriously need to remaster 'Irons In The Fire' and 'Lady T'.Those are two of her strongest albums.

And her first album "Wild and Peaceful" also. I don't think they ever put it on CD. Whenever I want to hear my favorite Teena Marie slow jam, "I Can't Love Anymore", I pull out my vinyl. biggrin

When you're an Old School artist who hasn't had a hit record in many years,it's hard to get ANY record deal,so you pretty much have to take what you can get.I don't think too many other major labels were knocking on Teena's door offering a deal.

I read that Baby or Mannie Fresh one of them from Cash Money heard the track "My Body's Hungry" and called Teena. I have the CD and I think it's a good product. No you're not going to get "Portuguese Love, Square Biz, 365 (my fav) because Teena's grown up, and alot of those songs were about Rick James (believe it or not). And the whole album is not rap, I don't know why someone posted that (must not have listened to the CD)
My favoriate tracks are:
I'm On Fire
My Body's Hungrey
Still In Love
A Rose (you may have to go onto Launch.com to view the video)
I love him too
I got you (duet w/ Rick)
Makeveli Never Lied
I've seen her live several times, and let me tell you, the girl is awesome!!! Close your eyes you would think that you're back in 81'.
