But give Alicia a chance too. Jill will come a lot more mature and she's a poet, but I'm hearing that Alicia's book is pretty good too, and she's a bit more personal in my opinion. Jill Scott is a SESSION poet as much as she's a vocalist.
She's been doing this for years & years, many veteran poets like Sonja Sanchez & Nikki Giovanni complimented her poetry sessions(coming from them, thats alot). Anybody can come up with a book nowadays, anybody can stand in front of a mic and look pretty like Nia Long in the Love Jones movie,,,but can ANYBODY be expressive? I'm not a fan of Jill's music but she won me over when I saw her pre4ming a poem called "Nothing Is Nothing" in the DefPoetryJam session. Shit,,,her poet "Thickness" from he live album should shut everybody up who suspects her poetry work. So hell naw, ALL these theories DON'T apply to her. [Edited 11/5/04 11:37am] | |

She is primarily a pop singer. She's a good pianist and a decent songwriter, and I like her quite a bit. But she is not primarily a poet. Jill Scott is first and foremost a poet.
