Yup! Their show here back in April was just a tiny little club show to kick off their reunion tour. Now they are doing a proper stop on the tour at a much larger venue. YAY!

So let me just start by saying that after seeing them in April at the Fine Line Music Cafe in Mpls, in that intimate club setting, for their first show ever in over 10 years and snaking my way to the front to within 3 people of the stage, I really wasn't getting my hopes up about the show tonight. In my mind, nothing could have possibly lived up to that.

But it did.

I mean, that show was it's own experience. Tonight was a whole new show. While at that show I was mainly blown away that I was actually seeing the Pixies, one of my favoritest bands in the world that had been broken up for over 10 years, it was about the experience of it. Tonight was about the music. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. A night like tonight for me is my idea of church. Feel it down to your knees kinda good times. (And I'd only had 2 drinks!) I couldn't begin to give a set list but stand outs for me were Tame, Gouge Away, I Bleed ( one of those I can't believe they're playing it! kinda moments), and Debaser. When Gigantic started, it was like the whole room woke up all over.
And can I just say that I want Kim Deal to have my babies. Seriously. There is no woman out there who can be more of a rock star while looking so fucking cute and innocent and just good and holy at the same time. She'd start to sing and her face would just light up and her eyes would get a little squinty and she'd just... smile. Or, you know, just jam away on her bass with a cigarette hangin out of her mouth looking cooler than shit. With almost no make up and in jeans and a plain black sweatshirt mind you. Ah, Kim.
The rest of the band was in top form also, Frank Black/Black Francis/whatever he's calling himself these days (Charles?) had his wail down pat and Joey Santiago's surf guitar couldn't be smoother or noisier, depending on the mood. Even the drummer (I forget his name) came out of his shell to sing La La Love You (!), a song they played for the first time ever live at the Fine Line Show and they apparently couldn't coax him into singing at the show they did the previous night. (They said he was too shy. )
The set slammed and jumped from one song to the next until far into the set when Kim started cracking a joke or a smile here and there and Frank/whatever finally opened up his mouth to do more than wail. It was fun and a rare treat to see them laughing and joking with each other when all reports I've heard say they haven't done much of that at ALL on this tour.
All in all, one of the best shows of my life. I've got about 10 shows that I consider to be in my top 5 ( ) and this is easily one of them.

yay carrie! i'm so happy it was a good show. people keep asking me who's opening for them on saturday, and i keep saying "i don't care! it's THE PIXIES!!!"

yeah, the datsuns were a big deal a year or two ago - i've heard a couple of their songs and they didn't do much for me. i think urge overkill is opening for a couple of the chicago shows...i really hope that's who's opening saturday night.

i might be going on saturday night at the aragon here in chicago. some guy i recently met is a freelance photographer and he has offered to hook a brotha up with some tickets and backstage passes. i don't know if i'm available though. i would really like to go, though!
