Some Funky Old Soul for DavidEye

"Down Home Blues" by Z.Z. Hill? I'm surprised that someone else on this site remembers that song!

Props to some Soul artists you don't hear about everyday:

Z.Z. Hill - Cheatin' In The Next Room
Solomon Burke - Got To Get You Off My Mind
Linda Jones - Hypnotized
Clarence Carter - Patches
Joe Simon - The Chokin' Kind
Carla Thomas - Gee Whiz
O.V. Wright - You're Gonna Make Me Cry
Joe Tex - Hold What You've Got
Linda Clifford - Runaway Love
Bobby Blue Bland - I Pity The Fool
Arthur Alexander - You Better Move On
Jean Knight - Don't Talk About Jody
King Floyd - I Feel Like Dynamite
Dorothy Moore - Misty Blue
Percy Sledge - When A Man Loves A Woman
Ann Peebles - I'm Gonna Tear You Playhouse Down
Ann Sexton - If I Work My Thing On You
Johnnie Taylor - Who's Makin' Love?
Shirley Brown - Woman To Woman

These should bring back some memories. nod

I was also surprised that someone on the org had heard of Z.Z. Hill. I had always thought he just a local artist that was maybe heard of in the next state or two. Here's some more of the late Z.Z. HILL:

Down Home Blues
Someone Else Is Steppin' In
Shade Tree Mechanic
What Am I Gonna Tell Her
Friday Is My Day
Three Into Two Won't Go
Cheatin' In The Next Room
Right Arm For Your Love
Open House At My House
Wang Dang Doodle
Give A Little, Get A Little
Stop You From Giving Me The Blues

Has anyone ever heard of BOBBY RUSH?: He sang:

Sue
Wearing It Out
Talk To Your Daughter

Or DENISE LASALLE? She sang:

Don't Mess With My Tu-Tu
Down Home Blues (X Rated Version)....Remake of Z.Z. Hill's song.
This Bell Was Made For Ringing
Hey Lady, Honey Your Husband Is Cheatin' On Us
You Can Have That Lowdown Husband Of Mine, But Please Don't Mess With My Man

That was the blues side. On the funk side we had:

FREEDOM:

Get Up And Dance....This song was later sample by Grandmaster Flash and was called "Freedom".
Whodat Talk About We Can't Jam, Whodat, Whodat
At The Party
Do It All Night....Remake of Prince's song.

For ballads we had:

SHO-NUFF:

What Am I Gonna Do
Don't Be Lonely

For rap we had:

KYPER:

Conceited
Tic-Tac-Toe

These were/are all local artists.

The above list were local groups. On a national level, does anyone remember Millie Jackson's version of "If Loving You Is Wrong, I Don't Wanna Be Right"?

The "rap" segment is the reason I bought that song...she can really talk some trash! lol If you play all three parts of that song continuously, you have probably about a 15 minute song and they used to play every minute of it on the radio back in the day.

Bobby Rush was prominently featured in The Road To Memphis segment of the Martin Scorsese produced The BLUES documentary that was shown on PBS not too long ago.

See clips and segment overview here: The Road To Memphis

I remember Denise Lasalle from the Trapped By A Thing Called Love single.

I just picked up her 1983 Malaco album "Lady In The Street" yesterday. While I was browsing, I saw "Trapped By A Thing Called Love" and it was on a different record label. I also saw some of Z.Z. Hill's earlier work on a different record label also. I was wondering how people had heard of these artists on a national level. At least "Down Home Blues" was on Malaco. biggrin I'm hoping now that Jackson is trying to revitalize Farish Street, we may get some national recognition like Memphis' Beale Street.

Now Barbara I don't know how you're gonna take this
Or whether you be cool or come out of a bag
You see it really doesn't make any difference
But it's only fair that I let you know
That the man you're in love with...he's mine
From the top of his head to the bottom of his feet
The bed he sleeps in and every piece of food he eats
You see...I make it possible

Oh yes, I remember Ms. Shaw. That was a great song. That was back in the days when the "rap" part of the song took on a whole different meaning. That's when they would break the song down and just talk to you.

Two more great songs with a "rap" are:

Cause I Love You - Lenny Williams
She's Got Papers On Me - Richard "Dimples" Fields

vainandy I appreciate the compliment pray, but I hope I don't come off that way.
I just heard a great deal of southern soul music on local radio stations when I lived in north Georgia/south Florida.
I even had the experience of playing the so-called "Chitlin' circuit" while I was there. Some of the most unpretentious and music loving American folks i've ever run into.

I'll try and list some other more obscure artists as I remember them.

For example, a drummer that became a good friend and we ended up playing together for about 20 years used to play with a James Brown clone out of Georgia named Freddie Wilson. Freddie had a few singles out like (What Would It Be Like and Top Goin' Up, Bottom Goin' Down).

What Would It Be Like Pt.1
