Gangsta scored!!! In the tradition of Anxiety's great trip to the record store threads, I present to you my latest excursion.
I moved back to my hometown recently, and we ain't got jack shit for music shopping. Best Buy is about as far as it goes. So bratchild and I decided to head out of town for a fun-filled Sunday. One of the better stores in the greater Detroit area is Record Time. They had this killer 25% off sale on everything used. i.e. everything $8 was now $6 and everything $6 was now $4.50. So we went ape shit. I got a total of 24 cd's for a little under $110. What a steal! I decided to go overboard since I pretty much have to plan all my shopping now. Here's what I found: Deee-Lite - World Clique I have all their stuff on vinyl and cassette, but never on CD. I had a renaissance with them recently thanks to the Chicago kittie trip. Junior Senior - d-d-Don't Don't Stop The Beat Fun! What more is there to say? Goldfrapp - Black Cherry & Strict Machine singles All the talk lately has me intrigued. Le Tigre - This Island Bikini Kill was cool. But I had no idea about the connection. Sometimes I'm slow. Cocteau Twins - Garlands Always wanted to get into them, but only have tapes from friends. Taking it seriously this time. k.d. lang - Shadowland Somehow this is the only one I DON'T have. Earl Slick - Zig Zag Fucking brilliant guitar player for Bowie. "Isn't It Evening?" with his boss and "Believe" with Robert Smith are worth the price. Gail Ann Dorsey - I Used To Be If she sings and plays anything like she does live, this is sure to be a winner. Expecting great things. Interpol - self-titled EP For collector's purposes. Can - Monster Movie Whoa! That's all. Brian Eno & Harold Budd - Ambient 2/The Plateaux of Mirror Next up is 'My Life in the Bush of Ghosts'. Been having an electronic music kick lately. Must be a seasonal thing. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Playback Have wanted this for years and the price was finally right. It's a 6 disc box set and I got it for a measely $27!! Depeche Mode - Singles Box 1 These are so fucking great. I have many of their singles, but these are definitely the way to go. They collect almost everything from the various versions of each single and compile them onto one disc each; 6 discs in a set, 6 sets in all. Only $18! If only Prince would do the exact same thing with his singles. Sweet huh? So what've y'all picked up lately? Show and tell time. [Edited 11/8/04 1:18am] [Edited 11/8/04 1:20am]

Hey man,I LOVE that JuniorSenior CD! I just bought it a few months ago and I'm hooked. It's hard to describe their music....I guess you would call it "electropop/rock"? It's very edgy and alot of fun.My favorite track is "Move Your Feet",I like the retro-disco feel of this track.Another outstanding number is "Rhythm Bandits".They're working on a follow-up CD,but somehow,I bet it's gonna be overlooked by U.S. audiences

And I'm sure you encouraged them to do so in the process. Record shopping is infectious when you're in a group. When I go by myself, I'm usually looking for one thing and am in and out of there in a hurry. When I'm with friends, I take my time.

[Edited 11/8/04 1:18am] [Edited 11/8/04 1:20am] We had SO MUCH FUN ~ great music shopping, great food at La Shish and as always, insightful conversation with Gangsta. I don't know if I can remember everything but here's most of it ~ Many of these were purchased to fill in gaps in my ever growing collection. SMASHING PUMPKINS ~ Adore and Pisces Iscariot ENIGMA ~ The Screen Behind The Mirror K.D. LANG ~ Hymns To The 49th Parallel THE VELVET UNDERGROUND ~ Andy Warhol SWITCHBLADE SYMPHONY ~ Serpentine Gallery THE CURE ~ Wild Mood Swings COCTEAU TWINS ~ Milk & Kisses JONI MITCHELL ~ Hejira DEPECHE MODE ~ Music For The Masses DAVID BOWIE ~ Little Wonder Singles (2 sets) AND OUTSIDE ~ It is INSANE how much I love this CD. I've never heard it before ~ decided this is the time to get everything I don't have by him. Nathan said this was great but could be a challenge ~ it is but OMG ~ his voice is so dark and icy and the instruments create such incredible layers. The more I hear of Bowie the more I love and appreciate him. BJORK ~ Who Is It Single (they were out of nearly everything by her) NICK DRAKE ~ Pink Moon ~ Remastered also finally found the DVD for Rabbit Proof Fence ~ one of my favourite movies but difficult to find around here. I know I am forgetting something ~ hey Gangsta ~ what Tricky song is #13 Wishful Beginnings reminding me of?

It is insane isn't it? I don't think anybody knew he had it in him when that came out. It's so twisted and out there. I'm not sure what Tricky song that's like. I'll have to listen to it with you and have you point out what parts you think are similar. Maybe that'll trigger something.

Unless I'm decidedly rich at the moment. Every time I enter a music store with him he hands me a bare minimum of 3 CDs that I have to buy or else. |

The last time I went was the same weekend as endo and I, too, picked up the new Camper Van Beethoven (which was my own choice, BTW) and he handed me a used copy of Belle & Sebastian "The Boy With the Arab Strap". He handed me a few other things too, but I was trying to save money and I also picked up a copy of NME's special issue on goth. I can't believe I admitted that. |

Goth! j/k. If it had lengthy articles about Robert Smith, I'm sure it was worth it just for that. I got a full magazine decicated to Glam lately too. They're fun.
