Can anybody really explain the fascination with J-Lo? Don't get me wrong...she's cool and everything, but how did this career backup dancer suddenly become one of the most powerful women in the industry? was it due mostly to Puffy? Jamie Foxx once said that when he spoke to her after she kinda "blew up" she was aloof and he had to remind her that she just used to be a backup dancer on "In Living Color".
let's look at her ass-(ets): 1. nice booty--but damn, i've seen better 2. good dancer-- i've seen better 3. daring fashion sense--i mean was that green dress really ALL THAT? 4. marginal actress--has she carried a movie by herself yet?\ 5. average singing voice--she can warble, but hardly a powerhouse 6. relationships--ice cubes in the summer last longer than her relationships. so how does all this add up to a woman with leverage in the business? you look better on your facebook page than you do in person

Ambition, determination, ruthlessness, brains, opportunism, charm. was it due mostly to Puffy? No. She used his ideas, just like he uses other people's tunes. Jamie Foxx once said that when he spoke to her after she kinda "blew up" she was aloof and he had to remind her that she just used to be a backup dancer on "In Living Color". Bullshit stupid comment to make. Everyone has to start somewhere. See what he becomes like after he wins his Oscar for "Ray". let's look at her ass-(ets): 1. nice booty--but damn, i've seen better 2. good dancer-- i've seen better 3. daring fashion sense--i mean was that green dress really ALL THAT? 4. marginal actress--has she carried a movie by herself yet?\ 5. average singing voice--she can warble, but hardly a powerhouse 6. relationships--ice cubes in the summer last longer than her relationships. Apart from 6)., you can apply the same to Kylie Minogue. Take out 1). (because she's as flat as a board), 4). (because she's rubbish) and 6). and you're talking about Madonna. There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

Bernard Hopkins, is that you? The "fascination" is the media trying to tap into the buying power of the ever-growing Hispanic population. Jennifer just seems to want what any hollwood actor/actress wants and she has worked hard to get it, so the backlash, as usual, is unwarranted but inevitable.

It´s all about the package nowadays - not the talent and she´s got a nice package. Just as Madonna, Kylie, Britney and others. The world´ s not about depth these days, you know. Real talents are there sometimes in the streets having nothing to eat - sad, but true. "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

well at least they'll be thin, and won't have to diet, when their moment in the spotlight comes. "Awards are like hemorrhoids. Sooner or later, every asshole gets one."

Yeah I agree... it has a lot to do with the media focusing our attention on her. They have to have certain 'types' of people in the spotlight at certain times in order to draw in the audiences. But then again the "package" argument has much relevance too because there are plenty of hispanic singers and actresses with a better ass than her's and better voices and acting skills but maybe they probably can't speak english as good. or maybe they can sing but they can't act or vice-versa. J-Lo deserves respect, but as is always the case with celebrities in the media, you're not always in control of what the world is seeing and experiencing of you. Change it one more time..

Sorry mate by J lo is looking bleak on the career front.....I reckon she burnt out and needs a year or so rest.....at least from music! She overexposed herself and now it's showing.....too much of her was very annoying! Her songs remind me of what Paula Abdul was doing back in her heyday!

Of the Fly Girls, I always thought that the black chick with the green (or almond) eyes and the nice bottom was gonna be the breakout star. I think her name was Lisa. I first saw her in a Confunkshun video and was instantly smitten.

When J-Lo first burst onto the scene in the late 90s with her debut album,I thought she was really interesting. Her songs were typical pop/R&B tracks, but there was something really sexy and intriguing about her.But as the years went on,she became really annoying. She was getting more attention for her relationships and quickie marriages. She became a media whore, and that's when I lost interest. And she hasn't really released a decent single since "Play".She's still popular, but there's a slight sense of "who cares?" regarding her these days. Her latest marriage is more of a yawn than a big media event.

The only aspect of her career I ever liked was her performance in "Selena".
An didn't she play the teacher in "Jack" ? "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Honestly, if Selena had lived, I don't think that J. Lo would have had as much impact in the music industry or maybe even as much success as an actress.
Selena would have been much more successful in the music industry due to her superior vocal talent and a huge fan base; J.Lo would NOT have been able to compete with her. Selena was just on the verge of becoming a super-star. Her untimely, senseless death at the hands of that whacko-fan still just breaks my heart. In regarding to acting, J. Lo would have had to struggle a bit more coz it was the Selena role that really put her into the limelight.

I never understood it either. She was hyped up way too much mostly for things that didn't pertain to what she did (her songs, movies, etc.). A handful of her songs were really good but she got in kind of a rut where she would do a pop song and then a remix (more like a remake, which I give her credit for) with a rapper and they got a little bit repititous. She also tended to re-release stuff to get people to buy the remixes (what was with "The Reel Me"?). Her movies tended to be good. I just think she created too much hype around herself with the relationships and all. It ended up hurting her and might do some major damage to her career.

Lo would probably still be Jenifer Lopez and might be just a respected actress but probably not a huge star. In the long run, it might have been a good thing, considering how few well known, notable minority actresses there are in movies, and considering she would have had such scrutiny toward her.

Only "Out of Sight" is any good. The rest of her films are mediocre or plain crap. "Maid in Manhattan" is utter tripe .... my wife loves it. As for her records - she's done a couple of catchy toe tappers I'd never buy, but I wouldn't dismiss them either. I just think she created too much hype around herself with the relationships and all. It ended up hurting her and might do some major damage to her career. Did it hurt Elizabeth Taylor? I think she's trying to break her record Now, back to her ass ... I agree that she would not have received such popularity amongst the non-Hispanic audience, but saying that her being shot is the best thing that ever happened to her career is pretty ignorant imo. Many Mexican and Hispanic-American artists have long and "successful" careers (including doing crossover albums) withoug ever needing being the center of attention of the American anglophone population. Many Mexican and Hispanic-American artists have long and "successful" careers (including doing crossover albums) withoug ever needing being the center of attention of the American anglophone population. that's why i said "successful crossover artist". and i understand that you don't have to make it as a crossover artist to be successful, but appealing to and being marketed to the largest record-buying audience in the world does mean a great deal more success. and without being shot, there wouldn't have been all of that good-will sentiment behind her 2 English-language hits (that were released after her death) or a movie to immortalize her. as i said, being shot was the best thing that ever happened to her career. i didn't say it was a good thing. it was just the best thing that ever happened to her popularity as an entertainer. while i suspect that she and her family wished it hadn't happened, she probably would have had about the same career trajectory here as, say, Julio Iglesias, Jr. or Ricky Martin if you want to be really generous. OOOh That's cold. No, my premise is that Selena is far more talented as a music artist than J.Lo. could ever dream of being. Frankly, J. Lo can't sing, and Selena could, end of story.
