FUNKADELIC...better as a rock group or funk outfit

what era of Funakdelic do you like better....the 1969-1977 rock period(Alice In My Fantasies, Cosmic Slop) or the 1978-1983 funk(One Nation Under a Groove/Not Just Knee Deep) days...

while I think they put out EXCELLENT music in the late 70's ,there was NOTHING like their early albums..the funk influence was always there but their rock sensibilities on their pre-One Nation Under Groove stuff is simply amazing!!! I love their "rock" era(1969-1977) moreso than their "Parliament-clone" days

I really dig their 1978-83 period better. One Nation and Spanking of the War Babies.

That's a no brainer, player. Early Funkadelic (Westbound) hands down.

Lawd..I thought this would be easy to grasp confused ...I didnt know that I had to break it down sad mad ..
when I say "rock era"..I'm referring to their Westbound period (60's-1977) when the guitar was prominent and in the forefront of their music.....once they did the ONE NATION UNDER A GROOVE record in 78, they had started to de-emphasize the electric guitar and emphasize their funk grooves....while the funk has ALWAYS been a part of Funkadelic's music...there are periods in their history where they also had a STRONG and sometimes overwhelming(in a good way) rock element to their sound(69-77) then there was a time when the funk groove was more dominant and prevalent(1978 on)

Thumparello

I like the heavy rock era of early Funkadelic. But Parliament was real popular and there was probably a lot of pressure from their record company to make Funkadelic more commercial since Parliament was selling so well.

Lunchmeataphobia (Think! It Ain't Illegal Yet) is the bomb rock jam and it's on One Nation lp.

Regardless of whether they are a better funk or rock group, they are definatly a Rock group and I think its a damn shame that they get no love from the classic rock radio stations. There's absolutly no reason why songs like Superstupid, Alice in My Fantasies, Mommy What's a Funkadelic, & Good To Your Earlhole shouldn't be played along side songs like Purple Haze. Sorry, I'm gonna keep going.... "Who Said a Funk Band Can't Sell Albums?" They Sold More albums than plenty of those one hit wonders who get air time. And yet record companies these days won't even sign a band if they claim to be playing funk. It's time for a motherfunkin revolution. Who's with me?

Neil

It's all good!!!

And Parliament, Bootsy, Quazar and Mutiny too.

Eddie Hazel, Mike Hampton and Blackbird McKnight are all guitar gods if you ask me.

And Glen Goins is the greatest singer EVER!!!! A real shame he died so young.

Yup, I agree with you. I was just mentioning classic rock radio stations becasue I feel that funkadelic albums are a no-brainer. Basically I'm just complaining about the overall lack of funkadelic on radio.

I dig both eras as well, but I have really been into Maggot Brain and Free your Mind and Your Ass will follow lately because they have so much Eddie Hazel guitar.
