New Editon Album Review Thread

http://www.juno.co.uk/IP/...134-02.htm

http://www.vh1.com/artist...lbum.jhtml

I thought I would start a New Edition album Review Thread. I recall a few NE fans on this site in the pass. I have listened to their album on VH1 (full version) several times. Well, here it goes...

Keep your expectations very low and you will be ok with the result. LOL

Basically, Puffy trys to re establish the BBD sound while throwing in some 112 sound-a-like tracks. Puffy fails in both of those areas with the exception of All on You, which really captures that vintage BBD sound.

However, where this album really shines is when the guys just start singing (way @ the end, LOL) over well produced and arranged tracks which highlights the vocal strengths of Ralph, Johnny, and RIcky. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis found their succesor to Can U Stand The Rain ,with the song, Rewrite The Memories. Johnny Gill finally sings (way at the end) on the song,Come Home With Me Tonight (the CD's strongest track). Other standouts include, Leave, and Best Man.

Overall, the album just has too much filler and it's a shame P.Ditty couldn't forget about his love affair with BBD and 112 and just let New Edition do what their do best. Final Score: 6 (out of 10)

I knda like this CD. I just wish Puffy would have just turned the reigns over to Jam and Lewis for the entire project. I agree that on the tracks when they actually sing the CD is brilliant and beautiful. There just isnn't enough of that on this CD. What a shame! These guys deserve far better than what Puffy put forward. Perhaps radio will pick up the 4 or 5 superb tracks and the project will be deemed a success none the less.

Right now I like it because it is better to listen to than "Home Again"

It sounds like they are happy right now.

The production is well and nice. But it probably wouldve fit better on 112 CD like previously said.

I do like the CD though. And Its worth a New Edition fans' pick up.

Havent got to the Jimmy & Terry trax yet, but I like it so far.

Is P. Diddy a good producer? Seems like he hasn't produced too many hits lately.

P. Diddy is not a producer at all. It just says that in the credits.

P.Ditty's producing or executive producing is starting to fall off lately. Remember the Puffy/Mary J Blige reunion a couple of years ago. That CD was not a huge commerial success and there was nothing innovative on there. I think his production work is starting to feel a little outdated.

As far as NE fans - yes, this is a good CD 2 pick up, but it's not a complete CD by any strecth of the imagination. Their first single, Hot Tonight is no big deal. if this album is going to sell, they will need to release one of their POP ballads and hope that top 40 stations add them to their rotation. I think the song, Leave Me will be their next single.

Well, Mr. Ditty has his people (sometimes it's the Hit Squad or Mario Winans - people on his label) produce the tracks but he is the executive producer - he has the finally say on what tracks will go the album. He may even change/mix the track before final production.

Puff The Magic Sampler is producing it? SO, is it just a Police album with NE singing over it?

There's a perfectly good reason for this. When Puffy first started Bad Boy that was his heart & soul. He had B.I.G., Craig Mack, Total, Ma$e, Faith Evans, etc. Now that he has branced off into other cash cows (ie. Sean John, Justin's, etc.), Bad Boy has been placed into the back burner and is not a priority on Mr. Combs agenda. There used to be a time when he invested a lot of time and effort in his artists, but since there isn't much money in the music industry anyway, it's probably the farthest thing on his mind.

"All on You" is definately the strongest song on the cd. I agree that the BBD sound is all over this song.

There is no distinct sound on this cd. I was waiting for a song to stand out, but that never happened. I was also waiting for a JG song, but that never happened either.

I attended a NE concert in Chicago in July of 2002. NE was promoting the idea of this cd then. The intent of this cd was for a 20th anniversary celebration of the group. The cd was supposed to hit in 03. I have been expecting this cd for some time now, and I am somewhat disappointed in the end results.

I'm guessing the reason why it sounds so much like BBD is that hip hop rules the charts these days unfortunately. If New Edition released something more ballad-heavy, the album might sell as well as the last few Boys II Men LPs--which is not very well at all.

I like the album much better than Home Again. Home Again was good, but sounded too forced with everyone trying to grab the mic. The new cd has a little bit of classic NE mixed with today's sounds.

Jbchavez: There are a couple of stand out tracks like Re-Write the Memories and Come Home With Me with Johnny Gill on lead vocals.

Overall, good cd IMO. Favorite tracks so far are Wildest Dreams, Feelin It, Best Man, Re-Write the Memories, & Newness.

I dont look at them trying to recapture "NE Heartbreak" like Prince trying to recapture "Purple Rain" or "Sign O The TImes".

This is a great album, and better listenable than "All For Love" "Blue Moon" and "Home Again". Its right up there with Jon B's latest. Good listens

Kidding. Not really a fan of Jon B.

Yeah, I broke down and brought it - wink There's enough on the CD to please NE fans so fuck it.

Oh, and Jon B and NE should never be mentioned in the same sentence. Two totally different generes of music. But Jon B is cool though, but not even on the same level.
