Aretha Franklin --- SO over rated

Does anyone agree?
I can't stand the sound of her voice. I don't like how she performs either. What's the damn worship about?
Pink Cadillac is playing right now in the other room and it's like nails on a chalkboard.

I wouldn't go so far as saying she's over rated, but I prefer her gospel music to anything else. When she sings pop music, I don't care for it too much.

I know some people are going to flip out over this because she's supposed to be such a legend but I just don't get it.
I find her really hard to stomach.

We are all entitled to our opinions and we all have different tastes. I do like Aretha, but I don't put her on a pedestal like some do. I much prefer Chaka Khan, Whitney Houston, Billie or Ella to Aretha.

I also have people I prefer to Franklin, who I think are underrated. I think that's where the real problem is. Not that Artetha is overrated but that some of her contemporaries (as well as those that came before and after her) are underrated. Donna Summer comes to mind. Her voice can do any style song and make it sound amazing, not to mention her writing of lyrics and music.

I think Aretha's voice b4 it aged was a natural resource!! wink It was beautiful!! 1980's UNITED TOGETHER was Aretha's last hit where her voice was PERFECT..after that, a combo of her aging and a cigarette habit caused her voice to morph into the crap that it is today but her voice prior to the 80's was something to behold! Soul personified! smile

Okay, I have to acknowledge that I do like Natural Woman. You may be onto something here.

How many songs do you think she's written? Go check. She's released over 40 albums of her own, not to mention other artists. Overrated?

She's one of the Greatest Singers of All Time! ...having said that, however, I don't like all of her songs...For example I never liked Freeway of Love...(and Narada's my boy , too!...)but that doesn't diminish her status, IMO. Her 60's - 70's output is Stellar....it just got kinda hit and miss after that....

Now if the title was "Aretha Franklin - so overweighted", I would have nothing to say. The queen, however, has spoken....

Agreed !

She ruined "Natural woman" compared to the original from Carole King
the part she sings "when my soul was in the lost and found"
it sounds like "show", like she's got false teeth
And besides that she shouts too much and sings far too exaggerated
She ruined "Respect" , originally from Otis Redding too by singing over the top

Oh my God, haven't you all heard her version of 'Thrill Is Gone'?

Admittedly, she went off the boil in her choice of songs in the 80s and 90s but technically, nobody can touch her.
