i think the worst movies are the ones where the singer decides not to sing at all in the movie or portray a singer, but rather show their acting "range" (usually from A to B). J-Ho was decent in "Selena" but has pretty much sucked in everything else. Prince is best on screen when he has an instrument in hand (Purple Rain, SOTT). Neil Diamond was okay in The Jazz Singer

How 'bout "Masked & Anonymous," w/ Bob Dylan (& John Goodman, Jeff Bridges, Jessica Lange, Penelope Cruz, Luke Wilson, Giovanni Ribici, Christian Slater, Chris Penn...)
that movie's either great or horrible, I'm leaning towards horrible.

Also "Give My Regards to Broad Street"--Paul McCartney

If there's one thing you can say about the Wiz, it's thanks to that movie MJ has the career he does with his Quincy collaboration

Everybody was very good, except Diana Ross. I was shocked she gave such an over-exaggerated performance after Lady Sings the Blues and Mahogany, (I think she becamse a better actress after The Wiz). I loved Mabel King (the wicked witch), Michael Jackson (scarecrow), Nipsey Russel (tin-can man), Ted Ross (the Lion) and Lena Horne (the good witch) when she sang If You Believe. (I cried and I shivered)!!! I also loved the ending when everyone sang Brand New Day!!! Personally, I think it's a cult classic!!!

I think the biggest difference between The Wiz and Grafitti Bridge was that The Wiz kinda sunk under the weight of comparison to The Wizard of Oz despite the big budget and huge names involved in the project, while Grafitti Bridge, using a budget of loose coins and snot just stunk.

Amazon.com
Directed by Sidney Lumet (Serpico) and penned by Joel Schumacher (Batman and Robin), this lavish 1978 adaptation of the Broadway hit The Wiz was the biggest production filmed in New York City up to that point, utilizing the newly revamped Astoria Studios and locations around the city. Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, and Ted Ross (reprising his Tony-winning role as the Lion) star in this Academy Award-nominated musical for the whole family.
The Wiz is probably the grandest take on L. Frank Baum's classic tale The Wizard of Oz. The production team created sets with a sense of urban magic and spectacle: a New York subway station literally comes to life, and the massive plaza between the World Trade Center towers is transformed into the Emerald City, featuring nearly 400 dancers with three costume changes. Like all good musicals, the Quincy Jones arrangements are highly hummable long after viewing (especially the funky "Ease On Down the Road" and the inspirational "Brand New Day"). In an era before MTV, the camera stays nearly stationary as Ross and Lena Horne vocally soar through their numbers. Their stage-like performances successfully make the leap to film, making The Wiz a testament to their singing talents and star presence. The then-thirtysomething Ross raised some eyebrows playing the traditionally teenaged Dorothy, but she and her supporting cast (including Richard Pryor as the Wiz) carry the tunes with an infectious verve that will appeal to folks of all ages. --Shannon Gee

"The Wiz" is a good movie, with memorable performances and some very good songs. I agree with that stationary camera comment. I hate how they film musical segments today, and I really don't know anyone who really likes it. People complain all the time about not being able to see the dance numbers in modern musicals. I just know they'll screw up "Phantom" when it comes out.

It may not have been the best movie, but Janet was amazing in it. I especially love the scene where she starts to cry in the mirror as "I Never Dreamed You'd Leave in Summer" is playing on the record player.

One of my favorite lines: "An' whatchu doin' seein' a mailman anyway? You know they don't make no money! What's he gonna do for you, mail your bills for free?"

lol
'Cause your friends don't dance, and if they don't dance... well, they're no friends of mine.

For the life of me I don't know why heads are hatin' on The Wiz. That movie is an enduring childhood classic. It's a little long towards the end, but the performances are rich and memorable. The musical scenes were beautifully sung and Michael, Diana and Nipsey giving winning vocal performances. It felt like I was taking the journey with them (I know that sounds corny lol). But, yeah, when I have kids this is a movie I'm definitely going to share with them.
