The Mistress presents her Cut of the Week: Edwin Starr's "25 Miles"

Pulled out an old compilation album yesterday, and this song came on. I hadn't heard it in a while, and it just struck me in a whole new way. Ah-ah, ah-ah, ahhhh!

One of the things I love about this joint is the where the beat hits you: Not in the hips, not in the ass, but it goes right straight to your feet. Really makes you want to "step on, step on."

If you have this song lying around, pop it in today! And Michael Jackson's version doesn't count! tease

It goes, "25 miles from home, and my feet are hurtin' mighty baad...."

And there's no mistaking Edwin ("War") Starr's voice.

This is crazy! I've been thinking about this song ever since that "early house music" thread popped up. I've always thought a house remix of this song would kick ass!

Something about the call and response thing. This part always reminded me of the "Oh-oh-oh, Oh-Oh!" part in Serious Intention's, "You Don't Know".

Come on feet don't fail me now
I got ten more miles to go
I got nine, eight, seven, six, eight, six

If the lyric isn't ringing a bell, you'd probably recognize it immediately if you heard the horn line. nod

For real! lol I listened to it again in the shower this morning.

Reading your first post again, I just want to say worship to all the mamas who teach their babies about good music. I have a big family, and my earliest memories are of family gatherings where my mother and her five sisters would roll up the rug and put on the records: Motown, Stax and disco, and dance their way through six bottles of wine. Now my daughters are carrying it on too: they don't have any Ashanti or Britney CDs, but have their own collection of Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, Aretha, Janis Joplin and James Brown.
