Well let's see. Aretha is a black and a woman and there is a history of people on this board slamming RnB signers.

The only joke on this board would be you. Your ignorance about RnB speaks volumes.
You don't have to take me seriously because I don't take you seriously.

I remember Aretha or her management saying she was sick. I don't remember her denying that was lip synching. I'll look around and see if I can find a link. I doubt if I will because she is just a tired pathetic shell of herself these days (LOL). Nobody normal expects Aretha to sound like she did 30 years ago but she can give a lot of the non-signers today a run for their money. Now sit down a post something else ridiculous I need to be entertained.

Here is another article where they quote her deying the lip-synching. Sorry you are wrong.

(Detroit-AP)--Was Aretha Franklin lip-synching before Tuesday's NBA finals? Her vocals seemed to be out of sync with her mouth as she sang the National Anthem, and she was backed by a chorus that could not be seen. ABC compensated by showing extremely high, faraway shots of Franklin or shots of the flag or of players. However, The Detroit News quotes Diana Ferranti, multi-media director at the Palace of Auburn Hills, as saying Franklin did not sing to a track. A reporter asked Franklin if she was lip-synching and she answered with an emphatic "NO!" and flipped her hair defiantly.

Aretha has the right to be called the Queen of Soul and even though her voice has aged, she sounds pretty good for "an old black woman" evillol

EVERYTHING is about race to Laura. Also she told me I have issues because I made a joke about Aretha lip-syncing....which if you remember Aretha did and comically got caught doing.

Regardless to what any of you cackling bitches (male and female) have to say, she is and will forever be known as the "Queen of SOUL". There's not a damn thing you can do about it. Whether any of you think she's overrated or not is irrelevant. Her rep is solid. People are always legend bashing on here. Jealousy. To say you don't like her voice is one thing (she's not my favorite female vocalist either), but to bash her rep and call her undeserving when she's written more songs than your idol Prince is another. Get a career, bitches, and get off Aretha's tits.

Not over rated. She's classic old school. Her 80's years weren't the best, but it opened her up to new fans.

But to say she's over rated is like to say James Brown is overrated. Aretha served her time, been around forever, given us classics, so she deserves all of the allocades she gets. She is a legend and an icon for many.

So say many fans and ex-fans of Prince...

Since this term made me remember this, i've gotta go back on my word.

Diva-like?

I wonder which of the current crop of diva-wannabes, after having a 30 plus year career in the biz, and at the age of 56 (with approx 8 minutes of rehearsal time) would have the chops to successfully sing an aria (not even her style of music) as a last minute sub for Luciano Pavarotti on a live Grammy performance.

Before anyone answers, remember this "diva" has to sing, not lip-sync.

Btw, this happened in 1998, well beyond "the mid-eighties".

Barbara and Cher get called Divas because...Like Aretha, and Tina and Diana...they have all been in the business since before many of us were born. They also have many classics under their belts and STILL command large audiences. They have all had their day at one time or another.

See what I don't get about this thread is that Aretha is HARDLY in the mainstream or in the news that much, so I have a hard time understanding this over-rated business. No one is rating these gals...cuz they are the teachers of the school and passed all thier grade with flying colors back when. They have nothing to prove to anyone.

Aretha Franklin is an artist that I can take or leave. My favorite Aretha Franklin tracks are some that most true Aretha fans probably don't care for such as:

Rock Steady
What A Fool Believes
Can't Turn You Loose
Jump To It (12 Inch)
Get It Right
Freeway Of Love
Jumpin' Jack Flash
Respect (Remixed DJ Version)

Like I said, these are probably the only Aretha tracks I care for. As far as what people consider "classic" Aretha, those are the tracks that I don't care for. I love Aretha's voice and I love a good screamer but I don't go by voice alone, I prefer music first and voice later. That's probably why I prefer the particular tracks I like.

This topic makes me laugh because, People say Aretha has gained so much weight she cant move around and dance on stage like she once did in the past, So she sits at the piano the entire time and she sings like she is just cutting corners and making due. I even heard at a concert she gave she stoped in the middle of a song and pulled out a turkey burger and told the aurdience, Give me a minute and almost ate herself to sleep.

Well, I heard on the radio that she was sick. Perhaps the radio pulled this from a news source. You know that is were most radio commentators get their news from. Even if she did lip synch it appears to be a one-off time. I notice that you don't mention that she stepped in for Pavotti at the Grammys and handled herself pretty well(LOL).

Making the comments that you usually make about RnB music does show your ignorance. For some reason you and a lot of others on this board don't respect RnB music at all and I not talking about some dumb-ass rappers. It is pattren on this board to rip RnB stars a new ass-hole. This thread is ridiculous! Aretha Franklin is one of the GREATEST singers ever! She sings with genuine soul, passion and power....something that you rarely find on today's Top 40 charts.I'm beginning to think that some of you don't really understand or appreciate REAL SOUL MUSIC.Aretha has undeniable talent. She also plays piano and has written many of her biggest hits too.Ask almost ANY music lover what they think of Aretha Franklin, and I guarantee you that they will say something positive.

I totally agree with you!!! Aretha was fierce in the 60's and 70's!! When she sang any lyric and jam her voice would resonate up and down and hit notes that would place shivers down your spine!!! This girl obviously is listening to the "aged" Aretha after cigarettes, hard living, etc. Did she watch those two Diva shows on VH1 a couple of years ago?? Because of Aretha's presence, stature and her voice (and I don't mean weight problems) she simply "dwarfed" and "blew-away" the other so-called Divas on that show - Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Gloria Stephan--- forgot the others!!!!

paligap said:

She's one of the Greatest Singers of All Time! ...having said that, however, I don't like all of her songs...For example I never liked Freeway of Love...(and Narada's my boy , too!...)but that doesn't diminish her status, IMO. Her 60's - 70's output is Stellar....it just got kinda hit and miss after that....

I would like you to dig through my posts and try to find some comments that I have made about R n' B music before this thread. BTW joking about lip-synching (which she did) and commenting how she is a shell of her former self is hardly ignorant.

Just one comment other then those two please (which should be pretty easy if I'm such a chief offender). Otherwise please shut up.

Well I don't smoke and I won't be 150 lbs overweight so I will probably be better off then Aretha. I work out at a gym 4 or 5 times a week and I am a distance runner who eats healthy so I'm thinking I will be okay.
