I'm rather stunned. Not every vocal instrument can convey deep gut-wrenching passion and emotion. Aretha is one of them. It's more than the sound of her wailing (which you might call screeching), it's the texture and the unnameable something she uses to evoke feeling and memory from her listeners.

She makes you remember a night of passion, the lover who broke your heart, the romance you can't let go of. Her grasp goes beyond lyrics. Again, few others can do this.

All, I have to say is I took a compilation of Aretha on a road trip to Iowa in September, and that was the only album that the whole car full of people could agree on.

Songs like Since You've Been Gone, Dr. Feelgood, and Ain't No Way -- they really showcase the power of Aretha's voice -- way better than Freeway of Love ( Pink Cadillac)

I remember Aretha or her management saying she was sick. I don't remember her denying that was lip synching. I'll look around and see if I can find a link.
