I can hear Venus as a Lovesexy equivalent. But I don't connect Choirgirl w/ the BA.

I hear Choirgirl as more like TGE.. sorta brash, in your face, perhaps slightly over-the-top... very fully produced, lots of bold songs..

Not so much in the sound I guess. More in the place she was in her life. She has just lost a child and was mourning that death very intensely. I think of it being the most difficult time in her life, and that's why I equate it to the Black Album. But sonically and the way the albums are put together, Pele and Venus I see as direct counterparts to Sign and Lovesexy.

i see your point... hmm... I guess I don't see the BA in that way. For me, it was always sorta a random hodgepodge of songs cobbled together into an album, from various sessions.. kinda like Chaos & Disorder. I've never been a big BA fan biggrin But you're right abot Choirgirl being about the most difficult time in her life... some of the stuff (like iieee) is just harrowingly personal... but that is what is so great about Tori, she is not afraid to let it all out and that is what makes her music so powerful.

Hi JonSnow. Cool Thread! I haven't forgotten the Cd's ~ actually have started the compilation this weekend. I've been very short of computer time but hopefully by next week I'll have them ready for you.

cool smile i need to get off my tush and get those Human Drama CDs burned... I finally alphabetized my CDs (which was a week long project,LOL) so it's easier for me to make compilations. But i'll need you to send me an org-note w/ your addy again... i didn't realize the org notes automatically deleted themselves, and I didn't write it down. biggrin

Yeah, I don't see The Black Album as being emotionally harrowing or anything like that. It just seems like Tori had to go through something extremely dark to make it through to something as sensual, beautiful and warm as Venus, in the same way Lovesexy wouldn't exist without The Black Album.

Great news. I can´t wait to hear the new album. I hope it is as good as "Scarlet´s Walk" which is my favorite by Tori. The album title sounds like a David Sylvian album-title though.

I actually consider Boys For Pele to be her best work and her last great album. From The Choirgirl Hotel was okay but I thought To Venus And Back was an incoherent mess and Scarlet's Walk was just bland, altho' there were a few good songs. I just hope her next album is a bit wacky. That's when she's at her best.

Her first two are the most classic, but I actually prefer "Boys For Pele" through "Venus". I just feel like she was at her creative peak during those years.

I can't argue with that. It's just that with To Venus And Back she appears to favour creativity over actual songwriting. She blended the two well with Pele & Choirgirl. And also, Venus has some rather lame songs in Lust, Suede and Josephine. She has B sides better than those. Bliss and Glory Of The 80's are both great tracks, tho'.

The bitch owes me! I made that thing almost a year ago.

And it is BRILLIANT ~ hey ~ remember I told you that even Tori would be impressed and want a copy? Can't believe she stole your title!

I want a copy.

I love those songs! Lust and Suede are fucking great.

I think a lot of people weren't ready for her to trip out that much with Choirgirl and Venus. They just wanted their girl to sit behind her piano and keep writing the same kinds of songs. It seems like she's recoiled since then and is giving people more of what they want now. Sort of like U2 after Pop.

I am genuinely startled and alarmed by her work. That's why I like it. I am so turned on by it! Perhaps it takes a certain genius to write songs which embody psychosis the way she does.

The comparison is one of ease. Both woman used high voices. It is easier for people to push artists in a corner to tag them.

To me, in both cases, I love them because they are untagable. This is what I liked in Prince in the 80's.

Sure, I might not like everything these ladies do, but I still listen to them quite often. Just had a Kate Bush spell and now I am slightly moving off to Tori again.

By the way, I have to agree with Sassy. I never think of one while listening to the other; only here on this board I always bump into the same prejudice. I do not say there is no influence, cuz I bet Kate Bush must have made a smashing impression on ANYONE who ever saw her. But Tori has carved out her own special place in musical history from Little Earthquakes ona nd proved she does not need any comparison...she is TORI.

So, when does this Beekeeper come out and where is Fam's personalised Beekeeper tracklist?

Even though her earlier albums are my faves too, it is too easy to write off het later albums. They contain LOADS of treasures...like The Red Shoes contained duds and treasures too.

The Red Shoes had three songs that weren't so great. The rest were fine. smile

"From The Choirgirl Hotel"

star star star star star

otherworldly, entrancing, labyrinthine,
nocturnal, emperial, enthemological,
and above all: achingly beautiful and
gutwrenchingly painfull.

sometimes I wonder if this could be
the most beautiful album I will ever
hear.

sometimes I think it is.
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I agree. And I owe it to you that I gave this album another chance. It's one of my favorites by anyone now.

You can sum it all up with "Playboy Mommy" too. That song leaves me devastated.
