Parliament and Funkadelic were all different players starting out i believe. But over time they became the same band. Overlapping both bands. I know Bootsy has not played with Funkadelic much at all but Eddie Hazel who died played with both Parlaiment and Funkadelic. There are so many players in each band that it's hard to keep it all straight. They are kind of like Steely Dan where the players are all interchangable and always changing from one generation to the next.

They are the best! Funkadelic I like a little more than Parliament, it just sounds a little more down to earth to me. But they are bith wonderful. If you like them both you should definitely check out Bootsy Collin's Rubber Band as well (his solo stuff) it is outstanding and funky as it gets.

No disrespect, but I always think it's funny how some people after all these years are just now discovering the true roots of funk through Parliment/Funkadelics. But as they say... better late than never.

Parliament is George Clintons original. they used to be called "the parliaments" or "little sister" and did some funny doo-whop-stuff in the early sixties. funny to see how george looked like back then, like a human being in fact...
supernova is right Pfunkjazz can give more background on this. my knowledge about funk, soul and jazz is pretty deep, but I never got do much into p-funk.

We got 'em May '11 at UCLA.

Thought you'd be in VEGAS with EWF

much later after i figured all this out

OK I got ya. LA's version of this show is May 10 at the Greek Theatre and it features RICK JAMES, CHAKA KHAN and CAMEO. May 10 is also the date that PFUNK is in Las Vegas (EWF is there too!) and I may do a quickie out to LV and come back to LA for the PFUNK show in LA.

That's cuz GC recruits the young through incessant touring at small venues. Word gets out about the gigs and lots of young white kids come to get funked up. The scene has changed but it still thirves.

For a beginner Parliament/Funkadelic aka the P-Funk AllStars can be very confusing. There are at least 100 musicians that have been involved one time or the other. Here's a list of P-Funk artist to find...Eddie Hazel, Bernie Worrell, Junie Morrison, Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, Bootsy' Rubberband, Parlet, The Brides Of Funkenstein, Godmomma, the Sweat Band.

Musicians leave , comeback and leave again. Current bassist Billy "Bass" Nelson left in 1971 and returned in 1994. Rodney "Skeet " Curtis bassist for Maceo Parker is also a member of Parliament/Funkadelic when he so chooses.

For live shows check out Bernie Worrell and the Woo Warriors (P-Funk's original keyboardist) and Original P (who also travel under the name of Parliament/Funkadelic)...four original P-Funk vocalist who got a little disgruntled with George and went on there own. They have and do have plans on all working together again.

More notes although Maceo's tunure with James Brown made him a household name he spent more time as a member of George Clinton's and Bootsy's P-Funk Mob.

I'm sure P-Funkjazz would agree with me on this one go out and get Funkadelic live at the Meadowbrook 1971 for some pure unadulterated rock/funk. You will hear wear Chili Peppers, Prince ,Limpbiskit etc. got that funk from.

UHH HUH. I'm with ya on all that THUMPA!

Also be on the lookout for any of 3 versions of a 4 dsic set of PFUK live. The versions are EUROPEAN AMERICAN and JAPANESE and vary enough to be worth getting. The hardcore have all (plus backups). Refer the MOTHERPAGE (link above) for details and keep an eye to ebay for when they might show up.

Hey thebanishedone, I love this thread. Do yourself a big favor and get all the early stuff first, especially "Chocolate City"&"Up for the down Stroke"/Parliament;"Cosmic Slop","Standing on the Verge...","Maggot Brain","America Eat's It's Young"/Funkadelic
Most of the really great stuff died when Eddie Hazel was no longer writing and playing in the bands. No other guitarist that later came along could play anything as unique as "No Compute" though many have tried to cover "Maggot Brain" note for note yet they fail at the spirit and TONE!
While George was 'obviously' the boss, Eddie was certainly the shining musical genius.
I was blessed to be turned on to Funkadelic in 1972, and I can honestly say that I have been to all Parliament/Funkadelic shows within 400 miles of Philly during the years from 1972 thur 1983. Now I still go to the shows, I just don't travel as far to see them, but they don't come even close to their funk in their heyday. But check them out anyway, it still beats most of today's concerts.
WELCOME ABOARD ROOKIE FUNKATEER.

Just as I suspected. The P-Funk show in Philly was par. I don't know, maybe it's me, now that I no longer indulge in the cronic/weed/mary jane/etc I don't see/hear the show the same as others. Having 45 people on stage just doesn't seem to cut the funk.

To be honest, I heard the show was limited by external circumstances; not necessarily related to the element you cited.

FROM "ONE NATION" http://members2.boardhost...ionpfunkp:

MR. CLINTON GOES TO PENNSYLVANIA
Posted by Tim Kinley/GROOVE MANEUVERS on 4/13/2002, 9:29 am

Philly town that is. The gig at the University of Pennsylvania was literally cut in half, more than likely due to a city curfew. It was exactly two hours long, but they were able to fit a lot of freshadelic in a relatively short time. Gotta review the exact set list. Here are some highlights:
Funkentelechy-always a manic moment in any show. Gave Lige a solo in the middle of the mug that was highly competent and proficient. Bout time he stepped up to edge and flew on. Madd props to Lige.

Eternal-I guess they did a mixture of this jam and the similar sounding one done at Woodstock. They added a lot interesting musical nuances to this jam and I personally was not dissapointed.

Knee Deep-one extremely dramatic performance especially near the end. Real grandiose type shit.

The crowd shouted for more but alas it was not meant to be this time around. I hope they swing around here as much as possible. It definitely wasn't the Jam of the year as was the case in New York, but I drove home more than satisfied.

By the way I forgot to mention that Mike took another nasty solo in the middle of "Funkentelechy". The whole thing reminded me of the Houston 78 gig.

Nice to hear from someone whose opinion I can trust.

It's all the same!! George Clinton is the mastermind behind both. It's all funky. I have Parliament's greatest hits and that is funky. You can hear where all the rappers sampled bits off of it. Even if you've never heard Parliament per se, you know their music. You'll say "So that's where they got that sound (or beat) from." The only Funkadelic album I have is One Nation Under A Groove. It just depends. They are both equal in my opinion. Thus the term P-Funk (Parliament/Funkadelic).
