Do you prefer male vocalists/artists or female and why?

I tend to prefer female artists over male. Then again, sometimes I think it depends on the genre of music. I don't usually like male R&B singers. It just comes off sounding too slushy in my opinion. The only male singers I really love are....

george michael
rick james
john lennon
Prince

as far as female artists go, my favorites are.....
grace jones
kelis
stevie nicks
cheryl lyn
betty davis
alicia keys

i used to think i fancied female vocalists more, as some of my favorite voices are:

annie lennox
laurie anderson
diamanda galas
janis joplin
mama cass
sade
lady miss kier kirby

but my favorite vocalists EVER are:

prince
david bowie

so i guess i'm pretty co-ed in my tastes in vocalists.

I'm not sure it's a conscious preference, but I tend to purchase more music by men. (Although I recently noticed that I had 4 Mary J. Blige cds.) My current "must have" list consists of all male performers.

Male. as a guy, I just relate better to male singers, I guess. For example, Frank Sinatra songs wouldn't really be the same is sung by a woman, you dig? I mean, there have to be tons of women who could sing Frank under the table, but it's the braggadoccio and swagger that comes across in his music. It's just, male. Not macho, but male. It's a guy thing. Also, it's easier for me to sing along with a baritone. smile

I've always preferred male vocalists. Maybe because I'm male and can relate and feel them more. Especially when singing a very soulful/passionate song to a woman. I really dig the falsetto voice. I'm totally feeling some bruthas when they let it all go, no holding back. For example, 'Lenny Williams' on "'Cause I Love You", 'P' on 'Do Me, Baby", and 'Tommi Jenkins/Wayne Cooper' on 'Cameo's' "We're Going Out Tonight". Man, I wish I could do that!

I definitely prefer female vocals. And all-female bands really turn me on. Men in general just don't do it for me. It might be a sexual thing that I feel the women are singing to me like the old sirens of myth.

A friend of mine said however, that it's probably just the woman in me trying to get out.

Whatever.

Female singers.

Women are more expressive, interchangeable (artistically), and vocals are general more appealing to the ear. And IMO....women are just better at what they do then men are especially when it comes to creativity. shrug

You're a Diamanda fan! smile Cool. We're a rare bunch!

I definitely listen to more male artists... but when I was a teenager a girlfriend I had really turned me on to PJ Harvey, Tori Amos, Bjork, and the Cocteau Twins. Before that it was all really violent, angry, hostile music that made you wanna blow someone's brains out. The Cocteau Twins and Tori helped me get in touch with what my friend once called my "inner woman". Now me and my "inner woman" have a good healthy relationship. I now probably listen to about 60/40 male to female artists.
Change it one more time..

For me the ratio is probably 70/30 female to male. Just looking at my top 20 favorite recording artists, only four feature all male vocals. It's very lopsided.

nod yes indeed we are!

diamanda is second only to prince in terms of artists whose concerts i've seen the most times (i've seen her five times - it woulda been six, but she canceled her chicago show last month). no matter how much you may enjoy her albums, hearing her voice (and her piano playing) live just completely takes it to another level.

Nobody can hit on the right nerve like the woman, she can get down & gully, spill it all out without worrying about nothing.

Men are too prideful when it comes to their PAIN & WOUNDS and sometimes they lack honesty.

I think I tend to prefer female singers although my album collection might be half and half. I really love classic rock (a mostly male genre) but also dance pop (a mostly female genre) but also like a lot of hip-hop (mostly male), R&B/soul (mostly female) and alternative (about even, but mostly male). As far as vocals, I just think when a woman can sing, it's awesome...but when she can't...

I prefer female vocalists because male vocalists all seem to sound the same, well this generation of male singers.

I'm not really into many solo artists except for Prince, Rick James, Stevie Wonder, or Michael Jackson. I'm into more male dominated bands or groups. The majority of solo artists, whether male or female, tend to be too weak for my taste. I can't really get into someone who only sings slow music.
