John Lennon's God, or U2's God part 2??? IMO the John Lennon lyrics are very great, but U2 created an own 2nd version of this song with different tune and lyrics.... To me they are both great songs, but which lyrics are the best?
For me it will be John's, coz he was the 1st one... John Lennon- God God is a concept, By which we can measure, Our pain, I'll say it again, God is a concept, By which we can measure, Our pain, I don't believe in magic, I don't believe in I-ching, I don't believe in bible, I don't believe in tarot, I don't believe in Hitler, I don't believe in Jesus, I don't believe in Kennedy, I don't believe in Buddha, I don't believe in mantra, I don't believe in Gita, I don't believe in yoga, I don't believe in kings, I don't believe in Elvis, I don't believe in Zimmerman, I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me, Yoko and me, And that's reality. The dream is over, What can I say? The dream is over, Yesterday, I was dreamweaver, But now I'm reborn, I was the walrus, But now I'm John, And so dear friends, You just have to carry on, The dream is over. U2 - God part 2 Don't believe the devil I don't believe his book But the truth is not the same Without the lies he made up Don't believe in excess Success is to give Don't believe in riches But you should see where I live I...I believe in love Don't believe in forced entry Don't believe in rape But every time she passes by Wild thoughts escape I don't believe in death row Skid row or the gangs Don't believe in the Uzi It just went off in my hand I...I believe in love Don't believe in cocaine Got a speed-ball in my head I could cut and crack you open Do you hear what I said Don't believe them when they tell me There ain't no cure The rich stay healthy The sick stay poor I...I believe in love Don't believe in Goldman His type like a curse Instant karma's going to get him If I don't get him first Don't believe in rock 'n' roll Can really change the world As it spins in revolution It spirals and turns I...I believe in love Don't believe in the 60's The golden age of pop You glorify the past When the future dries up Heard a singer on the radio late last night He says he's gonna kick the darkness 'til it bleeds daylight I...I believe in love I feel like I'm falling Like I'm spinning on a wheel It always stops beside of me With a presence I can feel I...I believe in love the beautiful ones, you always seem to loose

I love these songs and have sometimes listened to them back-to-back like this. On the whole I like U2's more, although there is nothing as powerful as John Lennon saying "I don't believe in Beatles... the dream is over". Being a huge Beatles fan (although not alive in that era) it gets me every time...

Lennon's singing at the end of God is some of the finest you'll ever hear. I have nothing against U2, but Bono only sings that well in his dreams.

Got to pick Lennon's, as there would be no U2 version without it.
Isn't U2's version inspired by the Albert Goldman biography of Lennon? I actually liked that book. There was some negative speculative stuff, but it certainly wasn't all negative. I read an article around that time that joked about his forthcoming titles: Springsteen--Tunnel Visionary Prince--The Faggy Little Idiot Check this song out at:

I love both, but the 12" version of U2's god part 2 rules! .

apples and oranges... Lennon's "God" is one of rocks most important moments and an bare-bones piece of raw honesty that transcends rock music, IMO.
U2's track is a nice tribute and an interesting concept, but a little gimmicky for me and it sounds a bit dated now, especially the reference to "Goldman", who nobody nowadays probably knows (or cares) anything about. I thought it was out of place on an otherwise pretty good album, Rattle and Hum.

I love Lennon's tune, but I've never heard U2's. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.
