Freestyle was the soundtrack to my late high school/early college years. I generally liked the New York City acts more than the Miami ones.
NYC: Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam The Cover Girls TKA Sa-Fire Sweet Sensation Lydia Lee Love Noel India Cynthia Denise Lopez Corina Pajama Party George Lamond Lisette Melendez etc. Miami: Expose Sandee Nice N Wild Stevie B Trinere Company B Linear And then there were artists that weren't from either city like Nancy Martinez (Canada) and Nocera (Italy). . I have a crate load of 12" singles, but very few albums. Freestyle to me was really a singles market. The albums that I've heard just didn't hold up throughout and had too much filler tracks. That being said, I do own a few LPs that I think are okay: Expose - Exposure Expose - What You Don't Know Sweet Sensation - Take It While It's Hot Sa-Fire - Sa-Fire Lisette Melendez - Together Forever Expose's Exposure is probably the best of them all.

Many of them were big club hits in the 80s, but freestyle, no.

Chico1 said: Thanks. For four CDs, that's pretty damn good! I'm usually not a big fan of compliations because I'd rather by the CDs of the artists that I figure are worth owning instead. But that looks it contains a lot of stuff from artists that I wouldn't consider buying a full disc from yet I really dig enough of those songs to try to think it's a good buy. It has both Debbie Deb songs that I know! I gotta get it! It's certaintly going in the wish list!

Chico1 said: I don't know about this collection. There are a lot of non-hits and questionable selections. I would consider Newcleus and Hashim to be more electro than freestyle. And Pebbles' "Girlfriend" has no business being on there. The 'Freestyle Explosion' 5CD set while more expensive, is a better comp and stays truer to the freestyle genre. Neither collection has Pajama Party's "Yo No Sé" which I feel is a huge oversight.

I consider artists like Afrika Bambaataa and Planet Patrol to be electro. Mantronix is hard to categorize since they've done so many different things like hip hop, electro, freestyle and house. The line between early freestlye and electro can be very blurred at times because freestyle has its beginnings in electro. Later on in the late 80s, freestyle became almost exclusively Latin. Back in the day it was even called Latin hip-hop before many of the artists began to show their dislike for that term. . [Edited 10/28/04 8:11am]
